Where in Cornwall?
 

Hi

I would like to spend around 5 days in cornwall and would like to find a nice quite seaside spot as base.

I like to walk and see Land's end, The lizard and Tintagal.

Any suggestion where I can stay as base?

One starting place is to go to Trip Advisor and check out reviews for Cornwall.

I'm thinking we'll use a rental near St Ives as a base, but haven't booked yet.

St Ives, while interesting, would not make a good base IMO. Helston might be better, as it's more centrally located, with the beautiful Helston River (and Helford Passage) nearby. Also, the southern shoreline is more scenic and dramatic. The fishing villages of Mousehole, Cadgwith, and Coverack are must-sees. For cliffside walks and beach excursions, there's the gorgeous Mullion Cove and next to it, Kynance Cove. And don't miss St Michael's Mount! St Mawes, St Just in Roseland too.

Correction: That's the Helford River, not Helston River.

Tintagel is quite a distance from these other spots. If you do get up that way, try to include Clovelly.

A "seaside spot" might be difficult to find...

We stayed at this B&B in Mevagissey and thought it a great base to explore some of the gardens we wanted to see: Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan & Lanhydrock.

the places you want to see -Land's End, the lizard, and TintagEl not tintagal] are all in the west of the county, so it makes sense to stay somewhere there, like St. Ives. [so long as it's not July or august when the place becomes a mad-house].

you don't say if you'll be driving or using public transport. that could make a difference. However, my favourite base in the west is Penzance, whether you are driving or using buses/trains. accessible by train and bus, excellent restaurants, and a lovely position and climate, with loads of B&Bs and guest-houses.

the only place that might be more difficult to get to is Tintagel - going there on the way into Cornwall or on the way out might be the best thing to do.

PS - there are many threads about the "best" time to visit Cornwall, or Devon, or..well you know the sort of thing. the answer is "this week" - we've had the loveliest weather with warm sun, and blue skies. ok, it's not quite hot enough for sunbathing, unless you keep your jumper on, but if you've been walking or gardening it's been t-shirt weather. fabulous. I'll try to remember how it felt when we're all shivering in July!

There's a fantastic-looking youth hostel (YHA) right on the cliffs on the Lizard - I've always fancied staying there for the location, and it's supposed to be very nice inside too.

Hi, I'd recommend around the Fowey area as a good base for seeing most things in Cornwall, and loads of beautiful walks as well including Saints Way, Hall Walk, Coast Walk, and easy access to North coast for Tintagel and west for Lands End etc. Best places to stay here see www.hybadore.co.uk for gorgeous self catering cottages, or there's the Pier House at Charlestown, although this is a little more expensive.
