Where do we get the best Road Map for Italy?
 

Hi

We have a car rental for 19 days in Italy and wanting to know which is the best country road map for the money and how to get one? Mainly using it for going from town to town.
Can we pickup the map before going over?

Most large bookstores have maps of Italy and the Touring CLub of Italy has some pretty good ones. You can search amazon.com also for roadmaps of Italy. I have a Michelin Tourist and Motoring Atlas that is spiral bound and only 3/8" thick that is very good.

For about the same price as a good bound atlas of Italy, you can get a decent raod atlas of Europe, which will serve you well for planning, and you can use again on future travels. Then, buy more specific maps when you arrive. All the main gas stations (on thje autostrade, for example) seem to have a good selection, with local detail that you might not find otherwise on any Italy atlas.

We always use the Touring Club Italiano (TCI) regional maps of Italy--Umbria, Toscana, Lazio etc. They are available at most large bookstores and through Amazon.com and Savvytraveler.com. Of course, if you are visiting many regions during this trip, you may want a spiral bound atlas of Italy. Michelin makes a good one. If you are concentrating on Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio, TCI makes a nice bound atlas of the "Centro" region of Italy.

If you don't have a GPS, I agree with the TCI maps with a scale of 1:200000. Better detail than the Michelin, which are 1:400000. ((b))

We just returned from a 3 week trip to Italy where we drove in Piedmonte, Liguria and Tuscany for 15 of our 21 days. We used the Touring Club Italiano map which had excellent detail. But keep in mind even the best map won't have all the detail - be sure and follow the signs and know what other towns are headed in the general direction you are going.
