Travelling with our 2 young teenage girls & ending a tour in Venice. Would like to stay 3-4 more days and travel by car/train in the surrounding area.

Can some suggest area sites/cities to visit that would appeal to our teens?
How about an awesome agritourismo to base from?

Well only you know your kids - but mine would have been bored stiff at any agriturismo.

They liked big cities, museums, shopping, cafes and nice restaurants. Have you asked the girls where they would like to go - after looking at Let's Go or similar student guides?

So you don't want to stay in Venice? Because kids like Venice and there are several excursions you can take from there. You can take the vaporetto to the islands in the lagoon, of which Murano, Burano and the Lido might be of most interest to your girls. Then you can daytrip by train to Padua, Verona, and Vicenza.

For an agriturismo, you will definitely need a car.

We'll have completed a 10 day tout that started in Rome, so they may be tired of museums/churches.

I was thinking agritourismo more for the ability to lounge by pool for an afternoon and it seems hotels with nice pools are scarce in Venice. Any area beaches that would be nice?

I do like the idea of day trips from Venice though. I think they'd like Verona. Would an overnight trip into Croatia be doable?

We are planning to fly out of Venice, but haven't booked yet, so we'd be open to something else

You could train to Lake Como and fly out of Milan.

Do a combo of Verona/Lake Garda or Lago Como and Milan.
Forget the lakes after 15 Oct.---you do not mention dates.

Can Lake Garda be done as a day trip from Venice?

well if you have not been to Rome or florence on your trip then I'd opt for that for more things for kids to be amazed at then running around northern Italy - if kids have been watching Jersey Shore in Florence maybe that would intrigue them but Rome has something for all ages - it takes about 3.5 hours by high-speed train now Venice to Rome I believe and you can easily fly out of Rome (or from florence the nearby Pisa Leonardo da Vinci Airport - florence also offers the chance to visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Not easily, but certainly feasible from Verona.

There are ferries from Venice to the Istrian peninsula of Croatia. You would need a car once you arrive and I'd suggest at least two nights....more would be better.

a longish day trip - say a few hours each way on a train since the fastest trains often do not stop at Decenzo or Peschiera de Garda (spellings?), the two railheads for Lake Garda - but these are lovely towns to stay in and at Garda you have GardaLand, which adults will lampoon but a theme park that is very popular with Italians - I have taken boats around the fjord-like lake and yes kids of that age will like that - Sirmione the small village is often hopelessly overrun with tourists but the Roman archaelogocial site on the edge of town is awesome IMO.

We took the train out of Venice to Peschiera de Garda and a bus to Malchesine on the northern end of the lake. We loved Malchesine....the castle with beautiful views, cable car up to Monte Baldo and the lakefront itself was wonderful. Highly recommend it. The trip to Malchesine took 3hrs in total.
