Where can you get a man's watch in Italy for a reasonable price?

We'll be going to Venice, Florence, Rome and taking excursions to Pisa, siena and San Gimignano in September. I was hoping to pay somewhere around $100. Any suggestions?

Hi L,

Hang out around the train stations and let it be known that you are interested in buying a watch.

It won't take long before you have a variety to choose.

Ira,

These are new watches? Is this similiar to what you would see in NYC? A man comes by with an overcoat on and opens the one side of coat and mumbles do you want a watch? Or is it different, more legit(sp?).

Actually, Ira is hoping that if you hang around LONG enough someone will offer to sell you the one that was stolen from him on his last trip!

If you are looking to buy a "knock-off" watch.....be wary.

I bought a "Tag" watch in Florence. The price started out at 300 Euros. Though the seller claimed it was genuine...I knew it was a fake. I just kept walking and he kept up with me. Eventually, I bought the watch for 40 Euros.

Within 30 days, the watch stopped working. So much for my bargain knock-off.

Not on Capri. When the battery on my watch failed, I went to WEMPE (?) for a replacement. The salesman in the shop actually said to me, "Sir, we don't carry watch batteries. On Capri, when a battery goes on a Rolex, we just through it into the sea and buy a new one."

LOL, Imitation. So an Italian sales clerk actually said this? And people think Americans are obnoxious?

lola34,
I hate to butt into your thread but I didnt want to start a new one for this question..

What are some other gifts besides watches (jewelry) that would be a good buy for a man, I have thought of leather and some art work. Any other suggestions from the men on this board?
Thanks

Janda, if any of the men in your life wear ties a beautiful Italian silk tie would make a wonderful present and ties are so easy to pack in your luggage.

For inexpensive mementos for any man that reads Italian leather bookmarks are another good idea.

For male family members, if you know their size and taste in clothing a shirt would be a good gift.

Gold jewlery is reasonably priced in Italy. And you can get 18 ct, 750 as marked on the piece.

For watches go up to Switzerland. Great prices. And you can throw in a Swiss Army knife. Every guy NEEDS a Swiss Army knife.

I have seen the hustlers in Italy show an arm load of watches. I laugh. It will probably break down before you get a green wrist.

Absolutely. I have 4.

Don't buy knockoffs. They aren't worth the money, no matter how cheap.

Why not buy one before you go? It'll be useful for catching the plane on time. Seriously, just supposing this was a serious question, Italy is not particularly well known for watches, and the guarantee won't be worth much once you get it home.

You would do far better to buy the watch in the USA as the euro is so strong against the dollar. There are very few bargains anywhere in Europe these days.

Thanks annhig,

He needed a new watch and I just thought that it would be something neat to get in Italy. I was just very surprised at the prices that I saw on a few wed sites.
