Where can I see some Highland Cows in Scotland? Close to B&B?
 

I am thinking about a trip up to Scotland and I would really love to see some Highland Cows. Does anyone know of a small hotel or B&B or Castle Accomodations that haves a few? I would really love to get up close.

Heather, I just had to chuckle when I saw your post because I love Highland cows too. We spent most of our time in and around Glen Coe and there's only a small herd of about 20 cows left in the valley, so that's probably not the place for you (although you should go to Glen Coe anyway - it's incredible!). They were grazing near the road one day and I did get a few great pictures, see:

In the small village of Uig on the Isle of Skye (where you can catch the ferry to the Outer Hebrides), the Uig Hotel keeps a couple of highland coos on the premises (and some other kritters as well). They are quite tame, and you can interact with them if you like.

It's not fancy accommodation, but it's very homey. We liked it there, a lot.

Imagine my delight a year ago when we were driving on an island in Portland Oregon where there are farms and flower fields and there was a herd of Highland cattle!

You will find Highland Cattle throughout the Highlands. One promising area for hunting these enigmatic Scottish beasts is the upper Spey Valley, most particularly on the minor roads that parallel the A9 from Aviemore upsteam to Kingussie and beyond. There, around Kincraig, Newtonmore and surrounding communities, you will find sufficient horns and woolly hides to ensure many happy photographic diversions.
Enjoy your Scottish travels! I have heard reports of wild Haggis being spotted along these by-ways too. But of the sight of Highland Cattle, you can be verily assured.

For a city boy who wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a Jersey and Holstein, What is a "Highland Cow", and what is the fascination?

A small number of highland cows can be easily seen in Pollock Country Park in Glasgow.

There are Highland cattle on the grounds of Glamis castle.

Well, I'll be darned, so that's what they look like! Thank you, Green Dragon, and Bluestar. I now realize that those shaggy beasts in a field not five minutes from my house are Highland Cattle!

Live and learn.

I hope I did not offend anyone with my "kinky" remark, but everyone's fascination with the beasts, and MrGo's comment of " ----tame, and you can interact with them if you like, reminded me of the crude jokes the farm kids in school used to make about "stump broke cows".

Yeah, but MY Highland Cows aren't pets, so there's no guarantees where they'll be.

Please, do not pick a B&B because of proximity to Highland cattle. You will see than all over - it is hard to avoid them. As mentioned above, on the grounds of Glamis Castle, or at Dunvegan Castle, on Skye, on Mull, on most minor roads anywhere in the highlands. Just all over the place.

I will start narrowing down where to go based on all of your suggestions and report back.

My dream would be some sort of a working farm that happens to have some of the highland cows in residence. We travel with our 6 year olds, and I have been trying to fit in a farm experience for a long time, but it has never worked out. I always look at all of those great farms stays in Austria.

We saw them all over Argyll. Definitely not pets though.
Outside of Scotland we stayed at a B&B near Hadrians wall which has a herd of highland cattle which are friendly and you can interact with. If you are interested I'll post the URL.

There are highland cows in North Easton, Massachusetts, on the grounds of one of the Ames estates. Quite a surprise to come around the corner and see them!
