When you return to a city, do you stay in the same place?

This is actually pretty funny, but in 71 trips to Paris I have only stayed at 4 hotels and 2 of them only once. So, for Paris being in my "comfort zone" is kind of key. Oh, I also stayed in an apartment once last year that was fabulous.
In other places that I revisit I tend to go to different hotels each time, though I'm now kind of hooked on the Hotel Modigliani in Rome.
London I go wherever I think I can afford to - which these days is nowhere.
I don't have much repeat experience with other major European cities, though I have tons with hotels and inns in small towns and medium-size cities. In those if I have liked a place in the past I usually return to it because the familiarity of the neighborhood means I can save vacation time by knowing where I am in relation to things.

Generally, the answer is no. We are taking our third trip to Paris having rented apartments both times before with two nights at one hotel upon our return from Provence.
This trip we are staying at one hotel(The Caron de Beaumarchais) at the start of our trip and another(George IV Rive Gauche) upon our return to Paris after Provence and Switzerland.
There are a few places from our travels I would probably go back to again and again despite my inclination to stay in different inns/hotels etc.
I would stay at the Birchwood Inn/Lenox,MA over and over again.

I'm in the "it depends" group, too. In a bigger city, or if the place we stayed at on our first visit doesn't trip our trigger, we'll try someplace new. If we go to a smaller place (e.g., Luzern), and like a place particularly well (location, service, view, value), we'll likely go back. This fall we are returning to three places we've visited in the past. Two will be in new places, one in an old standby with great view and close-to-train-station location.

If we liked the place we stayed and are able to book it again, we do. There are some places where we've even gone so far as to request the same room.
I can see the appeal of staying in another part of the city/area. But, for me, the peace of mind of knowing we're staying somewhere we liked would outweigh it. And I like the idea of returning to the scene of past pleasant experiences.
Hooray! Thanks to responding to this post, my column should now be straightened out when I click on my screen name. Last week I responded to the "no space in the title" thread (right after it first appeared) and it's taken me this long to work it out of my top 50!

In Europe I tend to stay at the same hotel if I enjoyed by stay. The customer service is at a different (notice: not better or worse - different) level of service in Europe. If I find a place I like I'll return.
It's a great feeling to walk into a place & know the people by their first name.

We tend to stay in the same hotels unless we find something we think might be better and if we do we try it out.
We have never knowingly allowed our hotel location to dictate what parts of a city we do and do not visit.

It's not a bad idea to stay at the same hotel, and remind them when you make the reservation. You might get a better rate, or room, and the hotel will make more of an effort to accomodate your preferences.

If we really loved the hotel we'll stay in it again. Most oten we stay someplace different (often someplace we found on the previous trip- usually if we like the location better - or style or some specific amenities).

It varies, one factor is how long we are staying, 7 days or less usually we pick a hotel, more than 7 days or accompanied by children we look to an apartment. Apartments we like to return to, we feel like we know where things are at in the neighborhood. Hotels, well, for short stays have a transient feel.

I am truly a creature of habit. Yes, I stay in the same Hotel most places I visit. Especially if they are good to Me to begin with.
I can't believe the fantastic treatment I get when I'm a repeat customer. For example: We always stay at the Ritz in Cancun. They have become like family to us and each stay gets better and better. So I guess regular customers make for a better stay. IMHO.

No, Paris is so familiar that I like to try different hotels, different cafes and restaurants in different neighborhoods and have never been disappointed. With one exception many years ago, I've always stayed on the Left Bank. I think every time I return that I'll try the Marais but wind up back on the L.B. I really have to push myself out of this comfort zone next time.

We are a group of urban nomad travellers and for those, like me and my friends, who like to change and visit different hotels, we have created a very useful website where luxury matches with emotion, personnality, location and comfort. www.hoosta.com is a style hotels collection with 80 hotels in Paris. All are unforgettable, somme very luxurious, others like a home away from home. They are carefully selected by my friends and I. We travel a lot, and like you we think that it's difficult to find the right place at the right moment (except with the help of Fodor's, of course!). That's why we did hoosta with direct access to official hotels websites. Telle me what you think.
