When Rachel Ray ate in Rome for $40...

I was just watching an old episode of Rachel Ray when she ate in Rome for $40. It must have been from a while ago because the dollar was favorable against the Euro. But aside from that, I was wondering if anyone had any comments on where (and what) she ate. Thanks!

Lunch at Enoteca Corsi: 15 euro
- spaghetti alla carbonara
- roasted chicken
- wine

Mid afternoon "snack" at Al Pompiere 12.30 euro
- fried vegetable antipasti - 3 selections 10 euro
- glass of wine (must have been on the house)
- bottle of water

Dinner at Spirito di Vino 14.40 euro
- pork dish
- wine

No doubt you know this (maybe in the back of your mind)... but the pedant in me prompts me to make the spelling correction (it IS pronounced as you have spelled it)..

She is Rachael Ray...

Best wishes,

Rex

Thanks Nutella--I *love* her $40/day show and she manages to get you excited about all the places she goes. Even a somewhat strange juice bar on Melrose in West Hollywood!! Her enthusiasm is infectuous. I will copy the names of these rstrnts for our next trip to Rome.

To anne..--which places and what did you think of them??

I enjoy that show too, but I'd like to see her get by on $40/day at the current exchange. Back then she was getting 45 euros for $40; now $40 equals about 30 euros. Poor Rachael would have to give up the wine w/dinner and eat candy bars as snacks.

That would cost her $54 today.

I think it's possible that you can eat in Rome on $40/day (if your hotel provides breakfast, you go on a picnic, etc.). But I find it really hard to believe that you can eat 3 RESTAURANT meals for under $40.

Where's Rachael's coffee? Gelato? How about the cover charge? Tip? (Smaller than in the US, but still...) Random bottle of water mid-day?

I, too, appreciate the enthusiasm. But I think $40 is a little unrealistic nowadays...

I agree hunnym. This also doesn't include the copierto charge (I have read that you can ask for the bread to be removed, but still you might actually want to eat some.)

She is very bubbly and cute and I do enjoy her shows. I often wonder if she would get excited over a fried dog turd though.....

LOL mjs!
Hunnym, she did have gelato, I forgot to list it. She had one scoop of pistacchio at San Crispino $1.25. She went there with some local guy and was seriously flirting with him, but it didn't work, she still had to pay for her own ice cream LOL

Here's the Rome list on the Food Network channel. If you click on the restaurant names at the bottom it gives you the address.

I'm sorry but I'm just curious.
Orgasmic? For her or for you?

In that case, and since you want to feel as orgasmic as Rachel Ray, then you should make it a point to eat at Al Pompiere. Very traditional Roman dishes (the fried artichoke and zucchini blossoms are next to excellent), pasta and fish dishes are based on what's fresh in the market for the day and it is so traditonal that the restaurants appealing decor and the waiters appeared to have stayed on since the 40's.

I enjoy her show and I think it's funny that you call her orgasmic. It's so true, she rolls her eyes and moans over every bite of food she ever tries. I wonder how often she fakes it, as it's hard to believe that she never gets a bad meal. Another thing that cracks me up is how she calls everyone she meets on the street her "new friend." And of course, she NEVER goes over her budget.

She was on David Letterman recently and he asked her what she does when she has a bad meal. She said that instead of saying "this food is awful," she talks about the "huge portions" or "interesting decor." ;-)

I really like her shows. She's fun and perky without being annoying.

I have gotten a few really good recipes from watching her 30 minute meal shows.
I imagine she would not be such a hit if she ever gagged after tasting something that she did not like, in a restaurant LOL

I rarely if ever watch "$40 a Day," but regularly watch "30 Minute Meals," and I have to say that her perkiness has begun to annoy me a bit. The Food Network now has back-to-back "30 Minute Meals" in the evening, so they have one recent episode and then an old one from two or three years ago. You can see how her personality has changed over the years, but even though I'm somewhat annoyed, I still really like her and watch regularly.
