When is the French grape harvest?

Speaking of Bourdeaux pecifically, is it before, after, or during the period Sept 8-25? If during, specifically when? I assume wine tours would be less leisurely, if held at all, during the harvest.

harvest varies from year to year, depending on weather - a good bet is from mid september to mid october.

many of the 1st growth chateau's close for the harvest. that said, we were there last year during the middle and visited Haut Brion, Latour, D'Yquem, Mouton Rothschild & Lynch Bages.

when trying to make reservations i found that margaux, cheval blanc and ausone were closed.

most tours were shorter (ie: 45 mins) but still included a tasting (the important part)

Well, it's not as though they can pick a date and say that's when we're going to pick the grapes - it's a delicate process of watching the weather and the grapes carefully until it becomes a "today's the day" scenario.

That said, according to the link above, this year's Bordeaux harvest is extremely "precocious," and they expect to be picking the whites the last week of August and the reds in the first half of September.

So it looks as though you're in luck!

The grape harvest has already begun, even in the north of France. Apparently they were caught off guard this year, and there are even recruiting stands for grape pickers in some of the train stations of southwestern France.
