when is the best time to visit?
 

Hi, <BR>My sister and I are planning a trip to Germany with our mother. Both of them have been before. Is March too chilly for Munich and the rest of Bavaria? Should we wait until May or September? <BR>Thanks

I have not been to Germany, but "too chilly" varies with the person. I'm sure you realize that anywhere in the northern hemisphere would be warmer on average in May or Sept than it would be in March. <BR>You can check these websites for historical weather data <BR>www.wunderground.com When you access a forecast for a city, at the bottom of the "current conditions" table, you'll see a box for "Historical Conditions". Not all cities have data; it seems to be available for larger cities in the country, but it's great for getting a general idea of temps/conditions during the time you'll be there. <BR>Also, <BR>www.washingtonpost.com <BR>good luck <BR>

You 'may' have snow in some areas in March. Probable not in Muenchen but in higher elovations. It can still be quite cold. Equate Germany with lower Maine and you'll get an idea of the weather. <BR>

As in most spots in the Northern Hemisphere it will be a bit warmer and drier in September and May than in March. <BR> <BR>I've found both September and April a bit wet and gray in both upper and lower Bavaria for my tastes, but certainly not to the extent I'd avoid traveling then. <BR> <BR>Whether it's "too" chilly in March is a subjective matter. P.S. <BR> <BR>Do you mean 'better' of the months you mentioned, or 'best', as in 'the best' time? <BR> <BR>If the latter, you'll have to put up with a few more tourists and go in June in my opinion. I have been to Germany in early May and also in early June. From these experiences I would recommend late May. March may be an OK month if you are going to concentrate on Munich, but if you are looking to tour Bavaria, then the way to do it is by car and the safer months would from late April on.

I was in Bavaria two years ago in mid-March. There was snow at Neuschwanstein (sp?). My sister and I made friends with a young girl traveling by herself because she kept sliding and falling in the snow and we had to hold her up. It was FREEZING in Munich and very windy. I think it was part of the reason I didn't enjoy Munich very much. I would wait if I were you. If you decide to go make sure you bring shoes, or better yet boots, with some good traction and pack a scarf and hat or hooded jacket and lots of sweaters.
