It depends a lot on your interests. We have been twice in May/June and once in August. Of those two, late spring was much preferable for us -- good weather -- not too many tourists -- lots of spring flowers. But, if you are going for skiing, well ...........

In late April/early May we cycled from Krimml to Krems. The Grossglockner Road was closed because of snow, and we had to overnight in Werfen (fortuitous I might add) because the ice caves (Eisreisenwelt) didn't open until May 1.
That said, I agree with bo, Spring is the best time to go. "a trip to Austria" is a pretty general statement, like any country, weather is variable, Austria ranges from the Alps to the Danube. In 2 weeks we went from gloves, earwarmers etc. to shorts and T-shirts.

As soon as you can.

No, really, I was there a couple of years ago in June. The weather was a bit on the rainy side, which I think is typical of the Alps. The reason I chose June was that I wanted to drive over the Grossglockner Road, which is closed between October/November and May because of snow. If you can, definitely make this drive - spectacular.

To David West
Do you really work for Camden Council ? Or have you just managed to get the email adress somehow (maybe you made it up who knows) ? I know that all politicians are just spoilt brats but I had expected a slightly mature response.
Anyway the Freedom Party are not the Nazi party and believe me I am the last person to defend them under normal circumstances (I've been to the demos against them). However when you insinuate that the whole of Austria is affected by NS sentiments then I feel I must stand up for my current home. Only about 20-24% of the population voted for the Freedom Party and the majority did so because the Socialist/Conservative coalition had been in power for 12yrs and most people were fed up with it (oh and the Freedom party offered ATS 5000 child benefit/mth). The Freedom party did not achieve a majority and could only join parliament in a coalition - they had no chance on their own.
Grow up and be realistic

If you're planning to visit Vienna and hoping to attend any type of musical performance (Boy's Choir, opera, symphony, etc) be sure to check out the schedules in guide book or online. Music season begins in the fall and the performers are generally on hiatus during the summer. If that's important to you, do some research.

Well, having visited Vienna last year I must say that David does have something there. The undercurrent of hostility towards foreigners by the Viennese was palpable. It was quite obvious to me that many Austrians were feeling inundated with immigrants, tourists and other "impure" elements, and I was not the least bit surprised to read that the neo-Nazi party had gained some power. Nor will I be the least bit surprised if and when they start something again. IMO, the attitudes are already there.

We visited Vienna, Budapest, Salzburg etc in November a few years ago and it was WONDERFUL.Fewer tourists, no lines, lower rates on nicer hotels etc. Weather was great...sometimes cool and rainy, but it felt good, and certainly didn't slow us down. It does get dark early, but just plan accordingly.

I live in Vienna. I would not visit Vienna or Salzburg in Jul, August. It is too hot and too many tourists. The best month in my opinion is may or september.
In may the climate is very nice. In september the lakes are still warm enough to swim. For skiing I would prefer Jan, Feb and March.
PS: I would prefer the Salzkammergut much more than Vienna or Salzburg.
