When does the school year begin in Germany?

I have tried unsuccessfully to "google" this info. Does anyone know when Germany, Austria, and Switzerland typically begin a school year? PJK

I am assuming you mean elementary and secondary school year. (Rather than University year, which does not match the school kids schedule.)Each Land in Germany has a different school schedule, staggering holidays keeps the roads less jammed. For the German school schedule by Land (provence) see http://www.kmk.org/service/ferien/ferien.htm

To Google other countries use "Ferienkalender" and the country name. I believe both Austria and Switzerland use the staggered holiday schedule by Land, too.

Hi PJK,
My son is dating a foreign exchange student from Aachen, Germany. The two of them were trying to work out their summer schedules in hopes that he could visit her this summer before they both go back to school. My son marked August 8th on the calendar as the day she goes back to highschool. Unfortunately, with both of their schedules they may have to wait until the winter holidays. Barb
