When does Germany warm up?
 

I am leaving for a two week trip to Germany on April 15 (Munich, Bavaria, and Rhine). I realize that Germany is not known for its warm climate, but when the heck is Spring? I see current weather forcasts for Munich and Frankfurt with some days not getting out of the 40's and overnight lows in the 30's.

In general, should it be warmer (50's-60's) in Germany this time of year? Are they having a long winter, or is this normal?

One more dumb question - are the trees and flowers blooming yet, or is it too early for that?

I sure was hoping for some sunny 60's.

I live in Germany, and yes, indeed, we had a very long and cold winter this year. But finally last weekend it started to warm up finally and currently temperatures are around the 50`s. April can be pretty much unpredictable here with nice sunny days as well as heavy rainfall. After April 15 you will probably encounter temperatures between 50`s and 60`s as you exspected. In the last years we had nice sunny weather with temperatures around 60 around Easter.
But it needs a bit a luck. Due to the cold winter we do not have many blooming flowers around now but -once it gets warmer- this will change pretty fast. I wish you a nice trip!

I was in Amsterdam around April 1 a few years back and was able to visit the tulip gardens. If I remember correctly, the tulips were just beginning to bloom, but it was clear that they would be in full bloom by the middle of April. It seems that the trees were also beginning to bloom.

I'm sure all the residents of Germany are hoping for some warm weather after this long winter. Let's cross our fingers for good luck!

You can always visit the spas in Germany. In Berlin they have Blub and Therman. Expect an assortment of saunas, hot pools, cold pools and a swimming pool. These will warm you up. No bathing suit--no problem here.

April 15 is pretty early for trees to be in leaf - in NYC you're only getting flowering trees that early and leaves don;t appear in full until May.

In Germany it will depend on where you are - definitely too early for the mountains or foothills.

We arrived in the Mosel River area on May 5th last year to rain and cold for the first 2 days. Finally, the rain went away but it was still pretty chilly most days as we moved around lower Germany. It was usually in the high 30's to low 40's in the early AM and warmed up into the low 60's or sometimes only the high 50's. We really wished we had brought gloves and scarves to ward off the chill. We'll be better prepared this year.

1st week in May is what you would expext in Munich.

Bring some warm clothing. The snow is falling again in Munich. When will it end? :-(

Seriously though, I bought a light-weight water-repellent jacket and an umbrella - not much call for that here in Las Vegas! I'm packing long pants and long sleeved shirts, but I'm not planning on bringing my ski parka. If it's that cold I will find something indoors to do.

I normally don't bring them to Europe, but since it will be raining, I will be bringing my tennis shoes. ( I believe they are known as 'trainers' over there.) I will be the obvious American tourist with the bright white Reeboks! That what I am the most comfortable trudging through water in because I can clean them off and I don't care if they get ruined.

There was some news of flooding in the north eastern parts of Germany, but is everything alright in the south? Roads okay?

hsv - still in Munich? Just talked to a lady in Mittenwald who told me they got 50 cm snow last night.

vegaslocal - according to the forecast it will get warmer from Thursday on - I think it should be 55 - 60 F. A mix of sun and clouds, showers most likely.

No floods in the south. Roads are ok, except for the snow today ;-)

Cannot quite get why people usually rave about the weather here :-)! Skiing conditions are perfect, though, although unfortunately my time is scarce.

Sounds like it will be warmer (hopefully not too warm) in July when we are there! Can't wait!!
