When and how to go
When would be the best time to take my family to Ireland. Have a 19yo and a 13yo, would like to go either winter or spring break. Not sure if we should take a tour or rent a car and tour ourselves, keeping in mind the teenagers.

Very funny ira, a good laugh but seriously the spring or summer. Wx in Ireland can be brutal even in May. If you get out on the peninsulas or up in the Mts in winter the wind will keep you in the car. Speaking of cars in my opinion its the only way to go if you want to see the real Ireland and not a bunch of tourist traps. In all my trips if I see a tour bus parked somwhere I usually keep driving.

We've been three times in April, once in Feb and twice in mid-June. This year we are going in the begining of June. If I had my druthers, we would go every year, in April.
Fewer crowds, but nearly everything is open. The people seem much more relaxed and/or appreciative of our presence, prices (particularly rental cars) are generally MUCH cheaper, and generally, the weather, though cool, is usually quite pleasant and mostly dry. |
Since the choice is between winter and spring break, I'd choose spring every time.
