What's your candidate for "Sticky Topic"?
There are certain topics that appear again and again, and the answers are the same and the same. If Fodor's were to implement a Sticky Topic feature (so that noobs can see if their question has already been explored), what ones would you nominate?
Converting money/using plastic Airport transfers Cell phones Oyster Cards/Travelcards Navigo I think those would cover about 80% of board traffic. |
What is there to do in xyz city.
Where should I stay in Paris. How do I book train tickets for... What to do with kids. Where to eat in Paris. Temperature!! What do I wear???? Packing Light. The problem with noobs is that they do not search this forum so it is unlikely that they will read a Help thread. |
Should I buy my flight tickets now or wait and hope for a sale? Will there be a sale before I need to fly?
What area of town should I stay in? How many days should I spend in x? If I only have x days to spend in Y, is there any use to go there? Is spending $x for y hotel or z restaurant, "worth it?" |
"Best" restaurant in Paris, Rome, Madrid.
Do I need A/C in (insert month) in (insert town)? Perfect 6 day itinerary for Ireland (including sidetrips to Scotland and Morocco) Will it rain in Poop-de-Chien on April 1st, 2014? Can I wear shorts in churches in Italy? Train travel in the UK on Christmas day (or Boxing day) |
What's the best way to get from here to there?
Should I fly, train or drive from x to y? Has anyone stayed at this hotel? apartment? What day trips can I take from x city? Please review this itinerary. The questions are pretty standard and they do get asked again and again--hence why travel guides so often follow a standard format. But the locations vary from question to question and so must the answers--except possibly for some very standard ones like 1) hotels, apartments and restaurants in Paris 2) day trips from Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, possibly others 3)issues surrounding the popular Italian triad of Venice, Florence and Rome or the Central European triad of Budapest, Prague and Vienna. We should look to how successful Guenmai has been in keeping up the threads about left and right bank hotels in Paris as an experiment in doing some "sticky noting." |
Should I carry huge sums of cash?
What is cheaper...Leonardo Express, Rome Shuttle, Taxi? What do you think of my 14 city, 8 day itinerary? Why doesn't Trenitialia website work? What can I do in London/Paris/Frankfurt with 4 hour layover? Do I need converter/adapter? What are they? |
<< Can I wear shorts in churches in Italy? >>
Even when you tell people they can't wear shorts in Italian churches they ask if they can wear long shorts. LOL |
I want to go to Europe! Where should I go?
Is it worth it to go to whatever place? Do you think this is a good price for airfare? |
What should I wear in Paris
|
Can I wear jeans in Rome?
Do they speak English in Paris? How many euros should I bring with me when I go to Italy this summer? I am going to Germany. What airport do I fly into? What is the name of a reasonably priced hotel in Paris? Polly Magoo |
Pro, I watched Polly Magoo again this afternoon.
|
Oh, isn't that so clairvoyant of you, Mimi?
I am using my Moxilla Firefox browser, which still logs me in as PP even though PP was supposedly banned. I think I hold the record for most bannings on Fodor's--17. I am such a bitch! Polly Magoo |
What's the best way to get to Venice from the airport/What's the best way to get to the airport from Venice.
|
<< I think I hold the record for most bannings on Fodor's--17. >>
Thanks for the laugh! You'd think the editors would get tired of banning you since you always resurface! Do you remember all your login IDs? |
no, thinny not clairvoyant, a friend knew klein's
photographs but not his films, so I said to him, Voila, here's what I will show you. :) |
I think the success of this forum is precisely in allowing broad range of subjects to be posted over and over.
Even when the same subject is introduced, the sequence by which the responses are posted give different emphasis to different aspects of the subject. I learn new ways to characterize each subject and respond to it in different ways. |
Can I drive to my apartment in Venice.
Can I get a park there. (Which generally allows Bob the Navigator to display his amazing breadth of knowledge. He's always interesting to read.) |
Sticky topics would never be a good idea here.
<< I think those would cover about 80% of board traffic. >> ...this is your "rough analysis of those five "topics"? You couldn't be more wrong, in my opinion. I think that a "short list" of say... about <blue>250</blue> questions would address... maybe 30% of the postings that appear here. That's what makes it so good. The next 30% could be perhaps summarized in about 1000 questions, and the remaining 40% are more or less unique, never really asked before - - thus, about 50,000 questions. Best wishes, Rex |
Is London, Paris, and Rome too much for one afternoon?
I know there was a 125 reply thread about what to do for 14 days if my flight arrived at 10:30, my flight arrives 10:34? What should I do? Most people think their trip is unique and do not read previous postings, thus answers to standard questions would fall into the same dust bin. |
PLEASE do not create a whole long list of stickies that fill the whole screen and one has to scroll past all of them every time to find the first thread with a new answer... Compared to other forums, I am so glad that Fodor's does not have them.
|
Yes, we went through this WHOLE thing beforew with the so-called "Paris Superthread" and I know that Ira remembers it quite clearly.
One of the people who pushed it then departed so she could be the big fish on another travel board where she's still pining for her hoosier heartthrob BUT I digress.....LOL That "superthread" became so unwieldy it was a nightmare and pretty soon anything even remotely associated with Paris got stuck in there. Frankly, I appreciate as much as anyone the concentration of information but I suspect when we start getting tocpics in stickies such as: "Why you are really STUPID if you take the Tube instead of those clogged-in-traffic busses in London" I think, Robes, you'll see the futility...sorry, just my opinion. |
Any question that is easier and faster to find an answer to with a google search.
|
There should be a standard encouragement on postings. Enjoy your trip, embarce the undforseen, make the trip your own, stop worrying.
While half the posters exhibit exceitement, the other 50% range from mild anxiety to pure hysteria. Of course, should be great anticiaption but there should also be a sense of anticipated pleasure and adventure. |
Yep.
Is XXXXX place safe? Where can I find a clean, safe hotel in XXXX? |
Should I get Euros before I go?
Should I carry my passport on my person? |
Why can't I wear my shorty shorts, swim bra and plastic flip flops into the Vatican? I wear them to the mall all the time.
We have a full week in Europe and know we have to see London, Paris and Rome. What other countries should be see in between? I'm going to London with my husband, mother and 3 adult children. We're having trouble finding a room for a resonable budget - 50 pounds a night. Where should we look? I've heard there is terrible crime in Madrid (or Rome or wherever). Should I cancel my trip? Or should I just stay in the safe areas, and which are they? I don't want to pay all those fees to exchange money. Can't I really buy anything I need just using dollars? And yes, I have seen real versions of all of the above on this board. It never ceases to amaze me. If people would ever look at a guide book, or a map, or, as my father says "use their heads for something besides a hat rack" - none of these questions would turn up here. |
What is the very best village in Provence?
|
Can I sneak seven people into a double room?
|
Will I be allowed to go to Cinque Terre if my shoelaces are not pressed?
Why does the Leaning Tower of Pisa lean? How do I take my own photo inside the Blue Grotto? But what if I don't speak Russian? Why aren't Euros and dollars the same? Why doesn't New York have just one airport? Comfy shoes so I can walk from LA to Las Vegas? |
