What's there to do/see in Copenhagen?

Hello Fodorites!

Not been here for a while but I'm currently thinking of taking a short trip to Copenhagen, maybe 2 or 3 days, and was wondering what the highlights of that city are?

So far I know about the Tivoli Gardens. Are there any other attractions?

Do a boat trip, lots to be seen plus you pass the mermaid,(blink and you miss her though :-O)

We also thoroughly enjoyed a 'Viking' exhibition in a village not far from Copenhagen, the name of it escapes me at the moment. Its a train ride away and there are display of Viking ships and you see the guys making them, and they sail them up the river.

A day trip on the ferry to Malmo on the Swedish coast was fun and a very short journey. Its a nice coastal town

Roskilde?

We also liked the Viking Museum - I expected it to be very cheesy but it was interesting, and Roskilde is a pretty town. There is a picturesque neighborhood near the Viking Museum with a lot of pretty thatched roof houses.
We did a day trip to Frederiksborg Castle and the "Hamlet" castle in Helsingor which we also really enjoyed.
Also liked walking around in the Christianshavn area in Copenhagen.

I really liked the Glyptoteket (sp), including its handsome cafe. I enjoyed browsing the Georg Jensen flagship store and just strolling through the old town.

When are you planning to visit?

Visit the contemporary museum of art called Louisiana. It is a short train ride from Copenhagen center and definately worth a visit.

In addition to Tivoli Gardens and the Glyptotek, also walk across the Rådhus Pladsen (City Hall Square) and walk along the Strøget, pedestrian-only shops, eating and little squares. Do visit Nyhavn (New Harbor) If you walk the Strøget from Rådhus Pladsen, Nyhavn is at the other end.

Carlsberg Brewery tour is worth it, if you are in to that. Not only is it a tour of the brewery, but also the stables where they keep the draft horses. & then of course there is the tasting.

For awesome views if you're not acrophobic, climb the steeple at Our Savior's Church. If you go to Tivoli, go at night. The lights make it a magical place, and it has some of the best people-watching in the world.

I second going to Tivoli, walking through Stroget along to Nyhavn, and taking a canal tour. These are some of the definite "must sees".

Other things to see/do: Climb the round tower on Stroget (well, actually walk, since its a ramp), visit Christianshaven palace (also on Stroget), go to Amelienborg Palace for the changing of the guards, visit the lakes, and if you're feeling brave visit Christiania (the hippy "free state" in the centre of the city).

Copenhagen is an amazing city - enjoy!

This is from the destinations section of this website:

If You Have 3 Days
Begin your first day at Rådhus Pladsen (City Hall Square) and follow Strøget, a pedestrian-only avenue, toward Nyhavn. Leave Strøget briefly at Amagertorv to visit the parliament building, Christiansborg; then, return to Strøget and make your way to the waterfront, all the while training an occasional glance at the shop windows in case anything catches your eye. Nyhavn is a good place to rest and refuel. You could take this opportunity to sample a classic Danish lunch of smørrebrød washed down with beer and snaps (schnapps). After lunch, head up to the royal palace of Amalienborg and take some time to explore the Bredgade area and find your way back to your hotel. If the weather is nice, the evening can be spent in Tivoli, but have your dinner outside the park to avoid the exorbitant prices. Early on the second day, take a boat excursion to see the city and its famed Den Lille Havfrue (The Little Mermaid) statue from the harbor. If you would prefer to get off and take pictures at the statue, make sure to take a DFDS Seaways sightseeing boat. In the afternoon, cross the inner harbor to the neighborhood of Christianshavn for a stroll along its canals toward Vor Frelsers Kirken (Church of Our Savior), where you can have a great aerial view of Copenhagen from the unique spire. This route leads you past the alternative compound of Christiania -- settled by hippies in the 1970s -- and beyond to the exclusive neighborhood of Holmen. The third day of your stay ought to be spent exploring the outlying Vesterbro neighborhood, with its cafés and shops. For art-lovers, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek would make a good several-hour detour on the way down Vesterbrogade.
