Everyone has different tastes. I thought the beach at Sam Remo was awful. With all the breakwaters just off shore I felt like I was swimming where boats should be docking. Not to mention that the train station is between the town and the beach. Not too pretty.

It depends what you are looking for in a beach. I had a great time in Santa Margherita, even though the "sand" is actually rocks the size of eggs. Monterosso has the benefit of being one of the Cinque Terre. On the Adriatic, I like Sirolo, just south of Ancona, at the foot of Monte Conero.

The beach beaches are in the south, and of course Sardegna. If it is fine sand and aquamarine waters you want, that's where you'll have to go.
