I have read news stories in the Italian press that their departures are, at times, significantly delayed. I don't know what their on-time record is, however.
As far as financial solvency, I have not seen their financial statements. There is always the chance that they could go belly up, like Volare. This is the reality in today's market. I have not read any reports that they are in financial difficulty (but neither had I seen any such reports about Volare until very near the end of the line).
If you can get a good fare from Meridiana, I personally would be tempted to take it, especially if the booking were in the relatively near future (spring or summer 2005).
I see, for example, that Meridiana now offers Roma Fiumicino to Cagliari for 49 Euros (plus taxes and surcharges), much less than Alitalia (which had a monopoly on this very important route until very recently).
