We stayed just around the corner from the old town square on U radnice. It is easy walking distance to a lot of the point of interest in the Prague city center and is close to a metro stop and a tram line. We found it to be very convinient.

Near central Mala Strana - within a couple of blocks of the Charles Bridge. Area is quieter than Old Town and still within walking distance of most major sites.

Bishop's House Hotel worked perfectly for us.

deopends what age your girls are, but if they are old enough to walk a little and take public transport then there are lots of areas you could stay in.Kampa island is a great location near charles Bridge but in a quiet little area.
Prague has a superb and cheap intergrated public transport system so as long as you are near to a metro or tram stop then you can get anywhere in the city quickly.
I like the Vinohrady area of the city and also Dejicka (mainly becase of the great pubs but i think that will be of less interest toyou.)but there are lots of good cheaper places slightly away from the main center that are worth looking at.
do a search on the main hotel booking sites and see what takes your fancy, check it on a map and see how near transport it is,
there are some great apartments to be had as well.
this website is pretty good for this,
http://www.travelcook.com/
there is a contact section where you can ask for advice on location etc.

Even if you don't use the trains much, ride the metro at least once (up towards the castle is likely best - you can skip climbing the hill) because the stations themselves are interesting.

Big Russ you been on the sherry again?
metro doesn't go to the castle but the tram does, best one is the No22 take it 2 stops past the castle to Pohorelec and that way you bypass the mass crowds and have an easy stroll down the hill to the castle area passing some lovely places including the stunning Loretto. One of my favourite places is just up from Pohorelec, the Strahov monestry, the library there was only reopened earlier this year after a massive refurbishment ,it is quite beautiful you can actually walk down to the castle from the gardens at the far end of the monestry complex ( bit complicated to explain how but obvious enough)

there are 2 Crowne Plazas in Prague as far as i am aware one, near Pohorelec above the castle close to the Strahov monestry, the other is in the Dejvicka area of the city. both are just a few steps from a tram line.In saying that the Dejvicka area is a bit of a mess with road works, they are building a new metro extension out towards the airport and it was a real mess when i passed by in late october.
last time i was near the crowne plaza in that area they were building an extension to the tram line that terminated right beside the hotel, that was in May this year and work was just starting,so i reackon that could be a problem area for a while yet.

Unclegus recommends Kampa Island as a great area to stay. I agree 1000%

If you are looking for a budget place, the Hotel Kampa Gardens is hard to beat. They have family rooms too.

Not the sherry - straight whisky (and this from a guy who spells itinerary "itenrty" and monastery "monestry").

We took the metro from Malastranska to Mustek, not from the Castle so Gus is right.

I would NOT stay close to the castle or outside the Prague 1 area. Dejvicka is in Prague 6 and not close to major sites. The Crowne Plaza locations are not good for tourists, period. The Intercontinental is fine, but good luck getting it for 120E.

With two teen girls and traveling with 3-4 females in a four-person group (sex of "friend of mine" not stated), you should stick to the safer areas and away from sections of the city that border dicey regions. Thus, NOT near the main train station (Praha hlavní nádraží) and not in New Town areas that don't border Old Town.

Preferred areas should include Mala Strana near Malastranska, Kampa Island, Josefov, and near Old Town Square. You should be able to find lodgings to fit nearly any budget that isn't unreasonably low ("can I find a room for four for $40 per night" type notion).

sorry BigRuss no insult intended.
I left my reading glasses at work, can,t see to type properly, but straight whisky would be my choice too.
I have to disagree on the safety aspect,Prague is one of the safest cities around,Hlavini used to be a bit dodgy until a few years back but the whole area has been transformed in recent years and the train station itself is more like a shopping mall than a transport hub, the station at Holesovice is a bit more dodgy especially in the dark.
