What's "half board"?
 

I'm looking at Austrian hotel rates and I can't recall what "half board" is? Breakfast included?

Breakfast and one other meal.

Hi padams, I would assume that in Austria "half board" is the same as in Italy. Your room rate includes breakfast and then either lunch OR dinner. Personally I don't like that as I prefer to go to local restaurants and I don't want to be locked into having to be at the hotel at a certain time for either lunch or dinner. Best regards.

Breakfast and dinner can be a great solution in smaller mountain towns and villages where there may be hardly any or no restaurant choices, the kind of place where you exert yourself hiking during the day and appreciate having a meal ready when you get home.

But in a town with nightlife etc., it may feel restricting to already have paid for that second meal.

I agree with WallyKringen.

We were just in Wengen (small village in Swiss Alps), Milan, Limone (small town on Lake Garda) and Venice. Of course, as a Fodorite, I did a lot of research to find a place with good food as well as nice accommodations. We stayed "half board" in Wengen and Limone, but did not in Milan or Venice. We had long days of hiking and being out on the lake in Wengen and Limone and it was nice and easy (especially with the kids - 12 and 15) to have a good meal right at the hotel. There were restaurants in the smaller towns, but not a ton. On the other hand, we would have felt limited using half board in the large cities given the huge variety of fabulous restaurants.

For sure in a little village, especially after all day of hiking coming "home" to a good meal would be wonderful!

But yes where there a lots of restaurant choices half board is not as much fun. Have a wonderful time in Austria padams!

And assuming Austria is the same as Switzerland in this regard---you can count on the food being very good, as well as a good value.
