What's everybody got planned for this Labor Day weekend?
They say this is one of the most heavily traveled weekends of the year; who's going somewhere and who's not?

I'm in the "not" camp this year. My only plans for the weekend are for staffing/chaperoning a youth church event tonight and going to a cookout on Labor Day.

Sheila Aug 31st, 2001 04:29 AM

What is "Labor Day"?:-)

Judy Aug 31st, 2001 05:19 AM

Sheila: It is a holiday established to celebrate American L(l)abor. With it's floating date, I would think it would be somewhat similar to your Bank Holiday in the UK, yes? I think a 3 day summer weekend is almost always welcomed here and elsewhere. Judy ;-)

It falls on the first Monday in September [there is some other condition-- but can't remember] and, effectively, marks the end of summer. Many schools in the US have already begun, but in our town there is a big party this weekend called, appropriately, "The Last Fling."

Isn't Labor Day on May 1 in Europe?
I'm in the 'not' camp as well, since it's not a holiday here in Germany. Poo!

Howard Aug 31st, 2001 05:46 AM

Sally, the other "requirement" for the date of Labor Day: It's the first Monday AFTER the first Sunday. In others words, Labor Day can never fall on September 1!

Dianne Aug 31st, 2001 05:49 AM

Labor Day is a holiday here in Canada too. I'm going out to the lake with my Germany and Spain guidebooks to continue planning my upcoming fall trip (yay!).

Donna Aug 31st, 2001 06:07 AM

I'm leaving Sept 1st for a three week trip to Germany, Prague, Austria and Northern Italy. I've been planning this for almost a year and can't believe I leave tomorrow!

Roger Aug 31st, 2001 06:09 AM

Off to Gualala in 6 hours.

s.fowler Aug 31st, 2001 06:22 AM

Thanks Howard -- little "details" like that are eluding me more and more....

Well we WERE going for a getaway -- but the starter on my Toyota just gave up the ghost -- so it may be hamburgers on the grill for us!

Ursula Aug 31st, 2001 06:26 AM

Business as usual here in Europe, at least on Monday = WORK!

Have all a great weekend!

Going to be taking the little one to the park to kick a ball around and feed the ducks. And of course work diligently on the Italy trip (can't believe it is six weeks from Saturday - so much to do). Had thought about taking my daughter to the beach, but our Memorial Day-beach-trip traffic experience changed my mind on that one.

I waited too long to make reservations anywhere fun to drive to and am saving my flying money for my trip to Europe in two weeks so it's things around home: Sat., the Sausalito Art Festival, via ferry from SF, Sunday its the Scottish Festival in Pleasanton, and Monday it's the Greek festival in Belmont. International weekend in the Bay Area.

Had to get somewhere where they spell Labour with a U, so it's Vancouver for us for a day. We'll probably have to drive halfway to the Rockies to find a border crossing where the wait won't be measured in weeks. Before and after, though, we'll be putting the "labor" back into "labor" day. Sucks.

Mel Aug 31st, 2001 08:33 AM

I've had to spend so many days on the road in August that I can't wait to have this weekend at home! Saturday morning we clean, then brunch with my brother. Probably do some antiquing in the afternoon. Saturday nights we usually meet a particular set of friends for dinner then coffee outdoors at a favorite haunt (coffee lasts for hours!)
Sunday we have no plans, which is LOVELY!
Monday we're going to a Renaissance Festival with our daughter and grandsons--they can't wait to see Knights and jousting!

ger Aug 31st, 2001 08:35 AM

Off tomorrow to Europe for 5 weeks (work & vacation: UK, Galway, Dublin, Bologna, Munich.

Regards

I'm heading north to New Hampshire as soon as I can wrap up things at work. 72 hours of golf, swimming, good conversation, good food and good wine. If the weather doesn't hold up, it's 72 hours of good conversation, good food and good wine.

grasshopper Aug 31st, 2001 09:08 AM

Liam,

Pray for rain! I agree with Mark Twain; golf is a good walk spoiled! :)

Have fun. The rest of the weekend sounds heavenly.

Randy Aug 31st, 2001 09:14 AM

Flying to Amsterdam 12 hours from right......now! Three weeks touring around. Paris. Rome. Nice. I feel like a kid at christmas. Thanks to all who answered questions to make the planning go together.
Randy

We are staying home. There is another meeting this weekend for those of us who are trying to prevent a large, local landowner from building a huge Ikea store in our backyard.

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 04:31 AM.
