What's Elba Island Italy like- has any one been?
Hi all, just came across this place and wondering what it is like
-could it fill 10 days (want a mostly relaxing trip but not entirely stuck in a villa/flat)
-beaches?
-scenic? (whats the terrain mostly)
-any general comments?
-difficult to get to?
We love relaxing places where we are maybe out an about for 2-3 hours a day getting lunch somewhere or on a beach with a picnic and then possibly back out for dinner in evening.
Thanks All

Went to Elba in the summer of 2010. Absolutely beautiful place. I think 10 days might be a bit too long though as there isn't too much to do beside lying at the beach. Very scenic views though. Best way to get there is via the ferry.

We were there for a long weekend last summer. Loved it. The beaches are lovely and there are lots of them to explore, some by boat only. Ten days would be a long time, but my family of slowtravs would love it. The terrain is very mountainous with windy roads. There is a bus system, I believe it goes all over.
Elba is quite easy to get to and a short hour ferry from Tuscany. Lots of middle class Italian and German tourists at the beach where we stayed. Don't think we met another American during our time on Elba but we were in a tiny village. Wonderful seafood, sunsets and very relaxing atmosphere.

Hello. We were there just last week. We had a long weekend (Sat-Tues) and would have loved a couple of weeks there.
We arrived by ferry (Mobyline - ticket booked 5 months in advance.e101 for the return trip,2 adults and car).
I suggest that a car is very handy as we saw very little public transport. The island looks a bit barren when approaching but is in fact gorgeous.
Gorgeous beaches included Sant' Andrea (where we stayed), Fettovaia (check spelling, doing from memory), and the beaches to the west of the blue grotto. Frankly, all the beaches we saw were lovely so I don't think you can go wrong.
In first weekend of June we enjoyed 29/30 deg celsius.
Loved it. Very pretty. Lots of hiking possible. Cyclists looked miserable - it's very hilly.
The roads are not fantastic to drive- a bit narrow, winding, and a few too many campervans taking more than 60% of an already narrow road!!
You could easily spend 10 days with a few books, some walks, and general recharging of the soul.
We stayed at Hotel da'Giacomino. They offered half board (brekkie and dinner). This was actually quite convenient so we could avoid driving at night.
Have fun.
