What's a good price for a 3 day auto rental Florence area?
I've gotten a $235.00 price for 3 days for an Alfa 156 It comes out to about $78 per day w/ all the extra fees included. It seems high to me. What prices are others getting? I arranged this price thru auto europe
Also, has anyone been able to use their American Express Card features to cover the collission cost. I am aware that theft ins is mandatory in Italy!

3-day rentals are never all that good a deal (compared to 7 day rentals). and I think that the cost of rental is up, compared to recent (already high) prices in Italy (from the past year or two).
It's representative of what people are finding as a pre-paid rate. I am sure some bargain rates will be had (sparingly?) and I am equally sure that some pople will pay more.
At least that's a good car, if memory serves me correctly.

I just booked four day rental through autoeurope for an Alpha Romeo 146 (smaller than yours) for $216 prepaid but fully refundable. This included a 5% discount for linking via www.karenbrown.com...all insurance incl. one way rental Rome to Florence. Be sure you request a manual transmission (assuming you can drive one) cause I noticed that automatics are very expensive. We booked through autoeurope in England and Ireland and they seem to beat the others in my experience.

morgan that price is probably not going to change that much. the alfa is a great car and handles the winding roads of tuscany like a dream. be sure to use the standard shift to your advantage and downshift where necessary. i tend to drive like the italians when im there and always request an alfa. if not avaible try a lancia its fast and also handles very well buon viaggio

I do not believe you mentioned where you plan to pick up your rental car. If you can rent at other than an airport location in Italy, it usually saves a little on the cost. There is an extra charge for airport pickup. But the cost may not be a major factor if the airport is more convenient for you. Also, AutoEurope will usually meet or beat a quote you receive from another company. So it would pay you to look around. Check other companies to see if they will allow you to use a gold card to avoid paying for collision damage. That could save you some money too. There are companies that will let you do this. Unfortunately, I do not believe you can avoid buying theft protection from the company.

Morgan - let me clarify...I'm an American. That 4 day Italy price was via the internet and in US dollars. Autoeurope is in Maine. Two years ago I booked cars in England and Ireland using AutoEurope as well and felt they got the best price. They are brokers.
