Whatever happened to Ian & Lonely Planet?

Wasn't that the greatest show on TV?!? The travel channel has not been the same since then and I am so sick of the Top Ten everything under the sun!

Anyone know if Lonely Planet is still being made, just not picked up by the Travel Channel?? What about Ian??????? Remember the Mongolia episode!!!! That was my favorite, what was yours?

Nicole write them a letter, write the programming department where you saw this show. I like Ian's segments also, now the show I looked for him on was on Channel 13 here in NYC which is a public broadcasting show. I somehow thought it was an extension of lonely planet but by another name. I remember a woman on some shows that was really bad. Shapiro I think was her name. I remember she was in Turkey and she was extremely condescending, turned her nose up right and center to every Turk she had contact with, she did even haggle but shopped on the show in general she was out of sorts seemed like she was not a happy in Turkey at all. I wrote in on that segment. Watched the show again and saw her in Israel, here she admitted on camera to an early trip where she stole a piece of an ancient tile in Israel. She thought it was cute. After that show I did not see the series again I really thought it got cancelled because of her behavior. Just showed very bad judgment to air some of her comments and certainly the defacing of the tile. I know they want honest opinions but you don't send someone who really can't for whatever reason appreciate the culture.

Wasn't Justine was on a show done by Rough Guide, not Lonely Planet? I couldn't believe how bad the show was, because I generally like their books.

She works for globe trekker and has shared episodes with Ian not along side of him but he will do short piece some place else. As far as I can see. She is up on the globbtrekker website also.

I like to watch those shows though because they remind me of my back packing days.

What was bad about the rough guide?

I'm sure that some people liked the Rough Guide show, because it was around for a long time, but I didn't, probably because I'm too old! It was like MTV -- jumpy graphics, one-second shots of sites, superficial dialog, and a party-party-party mentality. IMHO, of course...

The Globetrekker shows are not new they are no more then the old lonely planet shows repackaged for public television . I loved the Rough Guide shows when the travel channel actually traveled. I remember a british woman who was a tad bazaar and a harem of INdian Men a Raj or two.
I have recently seen one of the Raj's on BBC Travel while I was in Cannes this summer. Wish they bring back the rough guide shows too

Yes I liked Lonely Planet too. The Travel Channel to me sucks, I'm tired of Las Vegas and the Top Ten and Worlds Best! I wish they would go and get some NEW shows on other places...like Europe...lol well enough venting have a good night.
Kevin

I don't know about the show but Ian Wright said in one of his talks earlier this year that he was doing only two more episodes. I can't pick a favourite show but I did get a kick out of his ending to the Kilimanjaro climb.

I agree with Orgy 7. Travel channel has sunk to the lowest common cable denominator. Haunted this and jet-set that. Ten-best anything. This is tabloid t.v., not for serious travelers or even entertaining. Used to be that the Travel Channel and the Food Network were all I watched. Now I forget the Travel Channel, and will watch the Weather Channel before I can stomach another Emeril.

Who was the girl on Rough Guides that had really dark hair and always wore Chanel? I used to think she was funny, but then she got on my nerves, then a friend who worked for BBC tv told me about trying to keep her sober for a late night tv show, so I kind of got turned off by it all.

I too am so frustrated with the Travel Channel. They rarely leave Las Vegas, and then it might only be momentarily on a top ten hotel, etc. I have written their programming dept, but I think the Las Vegas family members have more pull than a small traveller like moi.

Hi Nicole
As we speak Ian is doing a speaking engagement tour to the Universities in Ontario..(Canada) He has been on local radio stations and write ups in local and national newspapers.
He still travels and works for Lonely planet corp. but I believe from the newspaper articles no new television episodes have been made recently.
The Travel Station here in Canada televises all the versions with Ian and other hosts packaged under the name of Pilot Guides......just a repackaged version of the older shows. OLN (Outdoor living network here also televises these.)
I agree with the other posters about justine Shapiro unfortunately. Some of her comments were too snooty and self centred and naval gazing for me.
There were however lots of other hosts who were in some memorable shows....the Australian lad in the Pakistan show for one...excellent coverage of a country full of contradictions.
(I also agree with you about the Mongolian show with Ian!!!!......when he ate that marmot I thought I would die.....and in the Venezuela episode when he was standing in a river feeling around in the sandy bottom for a amazon! sized python?? I had to rethink how wonderful his job must be!!
Our travel channel lately is showing some excellent series with Canadian hosts that are very popular including Valerie Pringle has left the building and Suite and Simple......yours sounds dreary with all those top ten things,,,,,very boring.
Nic

The Rough Guide chick's name was something like Magenta Divine, I think. Always thought her name sounded like stripper on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
