WHAT WOULD YOU RECCOMEND SEEING IN MENTON?

My son and I will be in Cannes for 5 days in June; plan to go to Monaco and Menton. Having been to Monaco I know what I want to show him. But, having never been to Menton, wondered what others would recommend. Not big on art galleries, but open to anything else.

Walk along the coast and into the major shopping street with its wonderful square. They have a nice indoor market not far from the coast. I know that the city hall has tiles or somesuch done by a major artist but we've never gone to look at it, preferring just to walk the streets and soak up the local ambiance. We have found it a very enjoyable city.

Reading out of my Michelin guide, the hall where marriages are performed in Town Hall was decorated by Jean Cocteau. (There's also a Jean Cocteau museum in Menton.) There are terraced tropical gardens (from Promenade de la Mer take Chemin de St. Jacques)from which there's a great veiw of the town & the water.

Palais Carnoles museum filled with art (13th century to modern)is the former summer residence of the Prince of Monaco.

St Michael's church is the called the largest & finest baroque church is the region.

I hope you're planning to visit the old fortified town of St Paul de Vence while you're there.
