But at the Messiah I attanded last December at the Albert Hall (proper middle England audience, many doing that grin at "We like sheep" that people who like sheep do. None of your poncey period instruments), we had immediate, 99.9%, unhesitating upstanding.

Trouble with these intellectuals at the Barbican, they've got all this existential angst.

Some of them, intellectual or not, clearly had arthritis too; and "all we like sheep" gets a grin anywhere - especially considering the face of one of the soloists that night.

And one advantage of the "authentic performance = small forces" movement is that they can take it such a lick you can get out well before closing time.

Still, once way to make sure of a stand-up might be to go to a "scratch Messiah" - if you can bear it.
