Leslie: Generally speaking, the US dollar is stronger vs. most European currencies right now than it has been in years.

Be selective in how and where you exchange your money and if possible, use your credit card for the best rates. You'll find some bargains, I would think.

Have fun!

Leslie, I can't give you the cost of specific items in Italy, but my impression when I was there in October was that the costs were similar to the US, i.e. for hotels and food. My fiance also bought shoes while we were in Rome and the cost was less than what you would find in major US cities taking into account the quality of the shoes. The exchange rate was around 1600 lira per $US in October and I gather that it is now around 1800 acording to the previous poster which makes things even cheaper right now.

Of course, what you spend varies from person to person, but let me give you another example. In Paris I would plan on spending on the order of $100 for dinner for 2. In Rome I would plan on $50. A rental car cost me around $300 per week in Italy and there were cheaper deals to be had.
