Oh wait - does anyone know where there is free parking in Panzano or Castellina?

In Castellina we just parked by the road or in a little parking area. I don't remember having to pay.

Never had any trouble parking in either of them. They are villages. On the other hand, San Gimi can be a challenge as far as finding a parking spot.

Doesn't San Gimigano have a parking garage (underground) with lots of levels?

There are several parking lots south of San Gim. You can catch the little bus that runs from parking lot to lot and then through San Gim. Easy.

You can easily park on the hill entering the town square in Panzano. We were there during the town's wine festival, which was thronged, but had no trouble finding parking. If you have a chance, visit the shop of Dario the butcher right off the twon square - a memorable experience.

Sher: A little chip off the old block, Bob?

Bob and I have a great in common, including a love of travel, music, sports, and food. And we both love his wife tremendously.

Mamcalice - when you enter Panzano and you mentioned parking on the hill. Is there a parking sign that will say "free parking."

I don't recall a sign that said "free parking" (or the equivalent in Italian) but there is plenty of free parking in Panzano. We parked both entering the town and leaving the town with no problem.

The name of the town is spelled (and said) San Gimignano. It's really not that hard.

Castellina and Greve are lovely towns in Chianti. South of Siena, you will find Montcalcino, Pienza and Montepulciana. These towns are 'must sees.'

Radda is very very pretty and so is Castellina. Together with Gaiole they were the 3 main towns of the Chianti military league. Greve developed later, during the middle ages and early renaissance the main centre in that area was Montefioralle (now a very charming and unspoilt little hamlet)and Greve was its market place (mercatale). Greve also has connections with New York, the castle of Verrazzano being the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano. Chianti has countless towns, villages, hamlets like Volpaia, castles like Brolio, Vicchiomaggio, Paneretta, etc. In one day you will be lucky to visit 3 or 4 of them.
