What to wear to a Highland dance?

After doing a bit of browsing through previous threads, I have gotten most of my questions about what to wear during my trip to Scotland (26 Aug to 12 Sept) answered - the exception is: what to wear to a Highland dance? (planning on going to the dance after the Lonach Games)

Thx! Kat

It depends on what you mean by "dance".. More than likely it is a post-games ceilidh. If so, you can wear pretty much what you like. Many folks will be going straight from the games so you will see everything from very casual to full-on highland dress. Tailored slacks or a skirt, and blouse or sweater will be fine.

In the unlikely event you are talking about a highland ball - then you will need a skirt - preferably long.

Jeans and tee shirt is fine, mairnets; smarter trousers- chinos or slacks and a shirt if you want to be sloghtly warmer. Take a cardigan or sweater too, since there a lot of milling about outside the Hotel, which is next to the hall, and it will cool down after dark.

Now, if you were going THIS weekend, to the Lonach Ball, that's a whole nother kettle of fish.....

Incidentally, we will be at the Lonach (with sfowler's DH in tow). Fell free to drop me an email if you want to touch base there, or not if you just shudder at the concept (in which case I will spend the whole afternoon trying to work out which American Tourist you are:))

So THAT'S where he's going :D:D:D:D:D

mairnets -- take Sheila up on her offer to meet -- she is one of God's good creatures ;)

Here's a link to the Lonach website.

You should wear a tartan ascot with a henweigh.

SuzieC Aug 23rd, 2004 09:07 AM

What's a henweigh?

My real name...Gracie Allen.

Janis's suggestion would be a hoot if mairnets is a man. I cannot imagine many drag queens attend a highland ball.

KT Aug 23rd, 2004 11:05 AM

And I cannot imagine too many men named Kat, like the OP....

sorry to disappoint, but I am indeed female and will not be attending the dance in drag...although a very good (and somewhat blond) friend out here in NYC thought that I should wear a kilt - 'you know, one of those plaid, pleated skirt-thingys' ;)

brookwood Aug 23rd, 2004 07:58 PM

What's a henweigh? About 4 pounds.

FWIE, we had a splendid day at the Lonach with Sally's husband. My plan for meeting Kat worked perfectly, and we had a pleasant glass of beer whilst watching the caber tossers and hill racers.

I've no idea how she got on at the dance, but there were walking wounded all over the road when we left Strathdon at 10.30pm, so I guess SOMEONE was having a good time.
