What to Wear in Scotland

We're going to be in Scotland in August, and I wanted to know what's appropriate to wear. Is it going to be warm enough for shorts and jogging shoes during the day, and are they okay? Are jeans okay? Regular slacks okay at night? Should I be taking a tie and coat for night?

In a normal year, you would expect hot, dry weather in Scotland but this year it is anyone's guess. Much of Scotland is countryside. Expect rain though you may get sun. It should still be warm to hot.

A tie? Only for expensive eateries. New/posh clothes single you out as a tourist, worth being pick pocketed (watch out for crowds in Edinburgh. A TV programme I saw while staying there showed an attractive young lady stealing from someone's back pack, before the police closed in.)
