<Gasp!> They look so...so...American!
;=) Seriously, this picture could have been taken outside the wine bar near me.

This café site will also show you how Parisians dress: www.les-artistes.net
You can even see a Parisian wearing shorts.

This is writer by a popular writer living in Paris and his take on how to dress. Everybody was in Jeans last year when I was there.

I was in Paris last year and saw a few tourists in jeans. I wore slacks like most of the locals. Except that the cops on the left bank were in shorts, helmets, and roller blades.

You are a popular writer? Pray tell.

Thanks to everyone who posted helpful comments.

To those who think fashion questions are always ridiculous in a travel discussion I respectfully remind you that you don't have to join threads entitled "What to Wear in Paris" - your disgust is well-noted but not always helpful. I LOVE fashion and I LOVE travel and in no way are they mutally exclusive. My original post, way back when, was inquiring after suggestions on how to marry comfort with fashion.

After more research, I've decided to take a pair of light green Mephisto sandals, a pair of black Mountain Equipment Co-op sandals (switching shoes is a good idea for any potential blisters) and a very cheeky pair of metallic sandals that will take up very little room in my tote so I can change when and if the circumstances dictate. If you're interested, they're the Chandelier sandals from Victoria Secret - they're kind of Egyptian looking and they get me TONS of compliments even from complete strangers - and they're pretty comfortable, too! They're fantastic because they're so tiny.

PINK in Paris? Got the comment's real meaning belatedly ... Socialist Party supporters sported pink around the recent election time. I am a bit slow to catch-on sometimes!

17 May 2007 - Just got back from 7-day Paris visit. Wear whatever your feel great in because you will see just about everything being worn ... from blue jeans to smart suits. People wore what suited their activity of the moment. Jeans were everywhere ... but I hate them for travel because they don't dry fast. Pack layers, yes. Saw virtually no shorts, except on joggers. More skirts but pants just fine, too, for women. Lots of long, solid-colored scarves wrapped around necks are still in fashion. Not so much, tho, on hot days (duh!). All kinds of shoes. All colors - don't go overboard on black. Try chocolate brown, perhaps, as your travel wardrobe's dark color anchor. Do choose darks to hide any travel stains, tho. Add some dashes of color! You'll look and feel livelier.
Insist on good walking shoes that are definitely broken-in! Pack blister pads, just in case! Use at first sign of rubbing and irritation. Use band-aid after skin rashes or breaks. One pair strappy, fancy slip-ons for dinner out nearby is fine.
My pashmina shawl got good use, again, especially as an evening wrap. Consider a soft color rather than black.
Mix 'n match pieces kept my luggage down to a wheel-aboard. Yippee!

Attn: to ValCanada
I took Mephisto's to Paris once and got them soaked Day One in a rain squall. They never dried out til I got them in warm Provencal sunshine 4 days later! Too cool in Paris for them to dry out. So, consider that if your own Mephistos are not water-proof!

Just back from Paris May 14th - only advice is to be sure to check weather forecasts before leaving. More specifically, if you're staying at a known hotel chain (Hilton, InterContinental, etc) I recommend you check the weather forecast at the specific property - not Yahoo or Weather channel or Google. I checked all the major sites for weather in Paris and clouds and thunderstorms were forecasted for the entire week. I packed accordingly... unfortunately it rained overnight a couple of times but not once was I ever rained on. If anything, I had to purchase sunglasses while I was there as I was expecting overcast days the entire week and did not take any with me. Also, had to purchase a jacket... it was 50-mid 60's even with sun. Also windy - cold windy. I had packed a couple of cardigans and a pashmina but it was not enough.

Checked today's weather (May 18)around noon and it was only 55F.

Noticed many Parisians wearing short trench coats (mostly dark, but saw several white that looked very sharp). Everyone wore jeans (darker)with ballet flats. I wore capris on one of the warmer days and felt out of place as I did not notice them on any one else (except for a handful of the older tourists).

Definitely plan on layering ... even with cold wind, it can get warm quickly with all the walking you'll most likely do.

We just returned from France and have to say that jeans are everywhere. Dark wash was more prevalent. My son had a pair of extremely faded jeans that he wore once but switched to his dark ones after seeing what everyone else was wearing. I had ckd the weather and knew that it would be chilly on some days but packed both long and short sleeve tees as well as a light weight short black trench. I wore this everyday. I also had to buy a scarf while I was there because it was chillier than I had anticipated. I had absolutely no color in my wardrobe. All of my tees were black as was my trench and my shoes and I fit right in. I was very comfortable in this color combination. I bowed to fashion rather than comfort and bought Joseph Seibel shoes which felt very comfortable when purchased but I quickly discovered that I hadn't broken them in sufficiently. My feet hurt for most of the trip. I should have taken my sneakers. I saw plenty of french people wearing white sneakers as well as colored ones. I also saw so many ballet flats but these would not have been practical for the amount of walking we did. Make comfort your number 1 priority, fashion second!

I love all those photos you folks posted,a nd especially the Lebovitz bit. Thanks.

Since my black suede 7 yr old Mephisto sandals are just now wearing out at the heel, I'm buy a new pair this weekend before I head back to France. I bought those sandals just before our last trip and they were great, even while toting around my 4 month old in a baby bjorn most of the time. Glad she is toting herself this time ... but what will she wear! (just kidding) But, I do put a lot of thought into what I bring to Europe each time I go. It is great to hear everyones opinion. I tend towards simple tops and pants and a sweater, with a few good scarves for accent, non?

Keep posting those great photos of parisens, s'il vous plait!

Dashes of color -- great advice. I love black but not all black in spring and summer, it looks hot and dreary.
