What should men wear when in italy? In the summer?

What is the age?

And where in Italy are you going?

My standard advice to people posting on clothing threads is to advise them to wear clothes.

Most people look better in clothes than they do naked.

Was wondering the same thing as my hubbie and I are leaving next week for Florence and it is hot! Do many restaurants require a coat? Or can he leave it at home? We want to just bring carryon and want to limit the bulky items.

We spent 2 weeks in Italy in June, and none of the restaurants we ate dinner at required coats. Men can wear shorts during the day, but they should wear long pants to dinner and need long pants to enter churches. No matter what you read on-line, I saw plenty of men in tennis shoes and sandals, but for dinner be a little dressier...long pants, a collared shirt, and shoes or at least nice sandals (not beach flips) are okay for dinner. Sure, someone on-line might say you look like a tourist, but can you really hide your camera and your maps and the fact that you are speaking English and pretend you're not a tourist? Italy was warm in June. I imagine in August a coat is useless.

Nice fitting pants, short sleeve shirt or polo style,
shoes? , never Tivas!!neat, well groomed as any New Yorker, but please, this advise is for warm weather places and if you really care about looking good, otherwise I believe people tourists are not, should wear what makes them feel good. For when you feel good, you'll always have a good time.
Italy makes beautiful linen shirts, very cool in summer, and unlike us, they don't care if it wrinkles.

Lordy, Ed, haven't you proposed yet? I thought you would be married by now.

Wear what you would wear to any metropolitan city unless you will be in the country then wear whatever you would wear in the country.

You can wear long shorts in Positano for the big question.

Don't be at all surprised by the amount of denim people in Italy are wearing, either, much less the wealth of different types of "athletic shoes."

You may not see many grown men in shorts but I would try to dress for comfort in the heat (of the day); nights tend to be cooler anyway.

And please don't forget: you ARE a tourist and these folks will KNOW that almost regardless of what you wear so worry about more important things and have a great trip.

My dears, a coat is an overcoat, when you say "coat and tie" you mean jacket and tie, ties are naff if not worn with a lounge suit.

As for only Americans wearing shorts - MiuMiu last season (spring/summer '04) featured smart shorts with belt-loops in their menswear collection. These were cut above the knee, and are best worn with a crisp white shirt or ultra soft grey cotton 1930s pyjama inspired T-shirt.

Wear what you wear at home, not one person is looking at you dear.

You should absolutely follow M_kingdon2's fashion advice to the letter!

When I first read you question, my thought was to advise you against wearing skirts in Italy, even below the knee. ALthough both of my brothers wear kilts at family occasions (Scots, we) I don't think the Italians would be amused, or they might be overly amused!

For comfort in the summer, even the Italian men might wear shorts, at least the ones I know around Positano, unless they are working or in church.
