It's funny. I live in a tourist area here in the States and WE can tell the tourists from the locals here. It's an inexplicable combination of their dress and behavior. It's a losing battle to try and deceive the natives BUT we all are wary when traveling abroad about being perceived as buffoons so dressing simply and respectfully is always a good idea.

Even though this thread is several years old, its still timely. We live in the DC area, now teaming with tourists. We can always spot them, so no matter how I dress ( and I dress well) in Europe or other places abroad, I'm sure I'm spotted as well. A complete waste of your energy to look like anything but yourself!( although while in Paris I have been mistaken for French several times; once a TV crew came up to me and spoke in French until I could get a word in edgewise to say I don't speak much French! They were actually taken aback! It was fun to learn what they wanted though: my opinion on a French soccer player!)
I love the tourists, stand out, and spend your $ in my town!!
