What to visit around Karlsruhe

We just moved to Karlsruhe last month with my partner. We are eager to discover the surrounding of Karlsruhe, including France. What weekend trip would you recommand?

Heidelberg is very beautiful. Would you recommend to visit the Black Forest?

What would you recommend to visit within a weekend with the 9 Euros train ticket and the starting point of Karlsruhe?

For investigating France from Karlsruhe start with Strasbourg. Then you can work your way to Metz.

Baden-Baden could be a fun trip especially if you like the baths, and should be easy to get to.

As well as what have been mentioned already, the Pfalz mountains are less than an hour's drive away to the west; lots of hiking opportunities, plus pretty towns like Bad Bergzabern and Annweiler and if you are interested in wine there is the Sueddeutsche Weinstrasse to follow at the southern end of which is the Deutsche Weintor, which is quite fun to go and see.

Also to the north Speyer is an interesting place to visit, due to its monumental Cathedral, and slightly further north Mannheim and Mainz. I just checked and there are €9 tickets on this route on Sat 9th July leaving Karlsruhe at 10am and leaving Mainz at 18.13. I suggest downloading the DB [Deutsche Bahn] app onto your phone as it's really easy to use, you can both research and buy tickets on it and it also covers France.

Sitting still is not our thing 😀. We love hiking, somehow nature gives us an energy boost. Thank you for the tip. Are the baths open during winter?

I agree that the hot springs are a much better trip in cold weather than hot.

You might also think of visiting the Rhein-Main region (Mainz, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt and the whole of the middle Rhine gorge) - not too far away, would make a nice day trip to pick certain towns there, could be repeated trips. Wiesbaden also has spas, the Kurhaus for musical performances, and a casino, typical 19th century pursuits. Very attractive city, beautiful 19th century architecture. Mainz has older buildings (a 1000 year old cathedral, the Mainzer Dom).

Black Forest - see Triberg and Gengenbach. Particularly Triberg is visited by German tourists. Have fun!

. . . and if you check the box for "nur nahverkehr" or "local transport only" it will show only the regional trains that work with the 9-Euro ticket.
