What to see near Lake Garda?

We'll be at Lake Garda for two nights in September and wonder what is interesting to see? Is it feasible to go to Switzerland? Do we need to rent a car?

Lake Garda is attractive enough for two days. I strongly recommend renting a car: the scenic drives around the lake and into the mountains are the main attraction (besides picturesque villages and towns).

For a short daytrip or half-daytrip, I would go to Verona: arena, cathedral, Romeo&Julietta-house etc.

If you want some dramatic mountain scenery, you can drive up to Monte Rosa.

Switzerland is a bit far away and it offers nothing that you do not have around Lake Garda.

There are some other destinations which are accessible from the southern end of Lake Garda: Milano, Padova - but I recommend driving around the lake, into the mountains and to Verona.

Hi DW - You can easily see the places of interest around Lake Garda itself by boat and/or bus.

Riva del Garda, Limone, Malcesine, Sirmione and Torri del Benaco are all attractive - and the Varone Falls near Riva are a nice side-trip.

If you have a car you could do a wonderful trip into the Dolomites - the most breathtaking mountain scenery in Italy.

Otherwise Verona, Trento, Bolzano and the Wine Route are all easily reached by public transport.

Really you need more than 2 days :)

i would spend a day with a car going up to the northern part of the lake that is so picturesque and majestic, stopping along the way at many of the little villages named. there are some nice coastal towns.
we thoroghly enjoyed our drive there.
we also stayed in trento which was a pleasant surpirse.

We are regular visitors to Lake Garda and never use a car.
We just hop on boats.

Miss Prism, As a regular visitor do you know if the lake boats are still working in early Nov.? From what I've read it looks as though they are not. We wil be staying in Sirmione and are looking forward to visiting towns via boats.

Hi RP - I think the mid-lake car ferry (Maderno-Torri del Benaco) is year round. Not sure about the others ...

Hope this helps ...
