What to see in Brittanny

I will be spending a few weeks in Brittanny/France this summer and would like to ask you if you can recommend any sights or tourist attractions to me. We like things that are off the beaten path as well as big tourist things. We also like a variety of things, ranging from museums, churches, cathedrals to quaint villages and nice sandy beaches. Any recommendations? Thank you so much for your help, it is much appreciated.

Write to me at [email protected] and I'll send you the 3 articles on travel in Brittany that I wrote for the bonjourparis.com site. That will get you started, at least; with 3 weeks you'll have the luxury of seeing quite a lot. Brittany is a great place to visit, with easy driving and a good variety of sights.

Well, where to start? There is Rennes the capital of Brittany. It has some old timber & plaster buildings on the square. The French call them columbarge (sp). There are also some beautiful gardens called Thabor gardens.

Definately go to Dinan. I cannot think of a more picturesque town in Brittany. It is also the home town of one of Brittany's most famous heroes, Bertrand du Guesclin. His heart is kept at the basilica of Saint-Sauveur at Dinan.

Take a trip to Ile de Brehat. Spend the day out on the island hiking & picnicing.

Visit the old walled town of St Malo. The reason the walls are so high around St Malo is to keep out the sea. I have been in St Malo during high tide. It is incredible! The waves actualy come over the wall & splash into the street!

Go to Cancale and eat oysters. You can sit in a beach front restaurant and look out over the oyester beds while eating fresh oysters.

And of course, Mont St Michel, "The wonder of the western world".

Don't miss Carnac and its megaliths.

Be sure to eat lots of crepes and drink lots of cidre. That is REAL Brittany food! Also must you eat moules (mussels) and wash them down with muscadet.

would help to know where you are staying? I would suggest a wonderful country place between St. Malo and Dinan..The Manoir de la Rance (on the lovely River Rance)...a charming house with beautiful sloping grounds to the river..very reasonably priced. Also, take the ocean drive from Dinard, one great scene after another. MSM and St. Malo deserve your time, also.
