What to do with one day in Split, Croatia

My hubby and i will be on a Royal Carribean Cruise in July. We will have one full day in Split, Croatia. We are in our late 30's, we are very active. What is the best or maybe two best (if we have time) things to do while we are there? The cruise ship is only offering one excursion which I predict will be super crowded. How are the beaches, are they close to port, and are they worth seeing? Should we tour the palace and ruins? Help and thoughts are appreciated.

Definitely tour the palace, making sure to see the Cathedral and peristyle and some of the medieval lanes that now cross through it. Beyond that, it depends on your interests. The archeology museum or Mestrovic Gallery or roaming the squares in and out of the Palace or enjoying the lungomare. Or take a bus to Trogir and roam around there for a while.

Thanks. I think we are definitely going to tour the palace. Will we still have time to wander to a beach before having to get back on the cruise at 3pm. I heard pebble beach is crowded but has really clear water.

After you tour the palace, you can simply relax on the Riva (at the port, basically), have an ice cream, and people watch for a while.

You can also hike up Marjan Hill (walk south from the port) and get some great views down on the port and the city.

Oh yes, the views from Marjan Hill are wonderful!

Sorry - that should be NORTH from the port to get up to Marjan Hill...

Good catch, Andrew!

I would go first to scenic medieval Trogir and come back in time to visit the Diocletian Palace and surroundings at Split.

Thanks so much. I think we have our day planned.

On the list of top things to see in Split, tourists are expected in the first place listed Diocletian's Palace, the ancient palace whose remains now form part of the historical center of this beautiful city.

Diocletian's Palace is not only a remarkable ancient monument, but also national and global good. Together with the later medieval buildings makes the archaeological, historical and artistic complex and therefore the 1979th been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is therefore not surprising that tourists so prices this Split treasure. Hope this helps.

Hello! I think we're on the same cruise and I am wondering the same thing. Does anyone know if there is enough time to take the ferry to Brac? We only have from 7AM-3PM. Also, Krka falls look amazing. Does anyone know if a tour through the cruise would be worth it or should I go with a reputable local company? Thanks!

I've been to Krka falls, and while lovely, it was stiflingly hot even in September.

Personally, if I had to choose, I would be more interesting in roaming around someplace unique like Diocletian's Palace (quite a warren but very interesting)in Split or Brac, if you can do it in time.
