What to do with a day and a half near Civitavecchia

We are flying to Rome FCO and spending 3 days in Rome prior to a cruise from Civitavecchia. We return on a Saturday morning and don't fly out of FCO until 8 pm on Sunday evening. We can't decide where to stay or what to do. We will be relying on public transport so that will limit our options somewhat. We have considered going back into Rome, staying near the beach in Ostia, or something else...any input would be greatly appreciated.

If you've not been to Rome before, I've a feeling you'll discover the answer to this quite soon after you arrive!

There are attractions near Civitavecchia, particularly the towns with Etruscan tombs, and these two may be of interest...

Where history meets the sea - Lazio's coastal archeological sites

Walking through time - Lazio's Parks, castles, monasteries etc

... but it ain't Rome!

eurcheapo.com Roma lots to do there if you have not been

Recently in May stayed at the Sheraton Roma hotwire.com

$69/nt it is their secret south Rome hotel shuttle to downtown

and airport for a couple of euros or hop the metro for 1 euro

www.ostia-antica.org nearby more intact than Pompeii...

seat61.com hopping regional trains

cheapest for me from port to Rome.

Happy Planning!
