What to do with a car while we stay in Capri?

We will have a car throughout our stay in Italy. We will be spending 2 nights in the middle of our trip on Capri (really looking forward to it). A car certainly doesn't seem important on this island, and my understanding is that there are large parts of the island where they are outright forbidden. So I have really 2 questions:
1) We will be going to Capri from a stay in Naples. Where is the best place to pick up a ferry?
2) What are your recommendations for what we do with the car during our stay?
I also want to say how helpful this group has been in planning our trip so far -- I'm so impressed by everyone'e knowledge and generousity in sharing it. Thanks in advance for a bit more help!

Hello Angela,

There are ferry & hydrofoil services to Capri from both Naples (Molo Beverello or Mergellina) and Sorrento.
These are run by various companies. For a comprehensive timetable see:
www.capri.net/home/en/transport.php

Timetables change seasonally so it's best to check just before you go.

Where to leave the car? There is outdoor and also underground car parking at Sorrento by the port.

Maybe someone else can suggest somewhere for Naples. Personally I would choose Sorrento for security.

Hope this helps ...

Steve
No problem to park your car at the car park in Via Brin, close to Molo Beverello (5 minutes by taxi) and not very far from Mergellina ( 15 minutes by taxi ).
No problems as security and also because cheap.
Have a nice trip.

Steve and Vincenzo: Thanks so much for your advice; it is very helpful. We will be staying in Sorrento following our time in Capri, so we may just choose where to leave the car based on how we feel that day. Thanks, Vicenzo, for letting us know that the lot in Naples will be safe.

(And thanks for saying many times in this forum that it is ok to visit the Amalfi coast in winter -- I was worried about it, but now am very much looking forward to our trip. I am very busy in THIS Naples in spring and fall, so this is when I can go.)

I already have so much of both of your tips downloaded to my Palm for the trip; now I can add a bit more!

For whatever it's worth, the following Capri hotel web site recommends against those approaches, with the explanation "as many as 35% tourist cars are stolen on the mainland"
http://www.hotelweber.com/EN/location.html

I don't agree with what the hotel recommends, but wanted to throw in a much needed reality check here. I see here a bad habit of rewarding messengers for the goodness of their news rather than the news itself. There have been warnings here about security and many warnings about poor winter weather and it's occasional effect on winter ferry crossings for that area.

Now since this news doesn't help rationalize wishful thinking, it isn't in much danger of a thank-you, but please don't anyway. It's a fundamental and published guideline for public forums (outside fodor's) to not burden general readership with private issues - email them direct or skip them. It's so tiresome to see a thread's been updated and it's just gushy fluff with nothing to add for the general fact finding readership.
