What to do when it's raining

Hi there! We will be in Portimao from March 13-18th, and the weather forecast is not looking promising. Any suggestions as to what to do when it is raining?
Thanks!!

You need to ask what to do on vacation when it is raining?:-)

HAHA...Very funny...other than that!

I feel amazingly ignorant. I'd be tempted to answer, but I must admit I don't have a clue where Portimao is or what one would normally do there if it wasn't raining.

StCirq Mar 9th, 2005 11:58 AM

I don't even know what country it's in!

sandi_travelnut Mar 9th, 2005 11:58 AM

Portugal?

Sleep late, have breakfast in bed, read a good book, drink wine in a local cafe, go shopping at the grocery store, write postcards and go to the post office... (& I have no idea where Portimao is either!).

Wear a raincoat and buy an umbrella?
Portimao?

Stay in?

Seriously, there is no such thing as bad weather; only the wrong clothes.

"There is no such thing as bad weather; only the wrong clothes"
I like that Sheila!! :)

I had to look it up, it was driving me crazy... Portimao is indeed in Portugal.

Grab a cup of coffee at a cafe...
Check out some local shops, clothing, books, pubs...
Find a charming resturant...
light Rain & rain clouds make pictures look amazing, run around and shoot some..
Are there any museums in this town? Rain would be the perfect time to check out any indoor attractions ....

Good Luck!

I went to Scotland last summer and needed all the clothes I could get. The rain did not stop in the three days I spent at Edinburgh. Then, on a three-day trip to the Highlands and Skye, there was nary a cloud in the sky! Just a great deep blue as far as the eye could see. I thought I was in another country. I returned to Edinburgh just in time to see the rain begin again.

Unless this is a beach reosrt - exactly what you were going to do before - just with an umbrella.

Get a local newspaper (even if you can't read the language) & (if you have one in your hotel room) watch TV on local stations. Both great ways to get a feel for a place.

Jessie,

The nearest beach to Portimao is at Praia Da Rocha - around a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk away. Although it has a fantastic beach, PDR itself is not a particularly pretty town, but there are plenty of bars & restaurants.

I spent a day in Portimao itself, but can't remember anything particularly striking about it. The most popular area for tourists seemed to be the riverside which was full of restaurants serving sardines.

Portimao is well situated for trips to other Algarve beach towns (e.g. Albufeira to the east & Lagos to the west) & it is also possible to go up into the hills to Montjuich (spelling?)

To sum up I recall it as being pleasant enough but couldn't suggest what to do in the event of bad weather.

Sorry I can't be of more help,

Jim

Montjuich, Barcelona? I think it's another country

moonchild Mar 11th, 2005 06:22 AM

It is Monchique,Portugal in the northern part of Algarve.

JJBhoy Mar 11th, 2005 09:55 AM

Sorry, lobo - as I indicated, I was pretty sure my spelling was out!

Shopping!
Seriously, Sheila has it right, except that if you're in a beach resort, I suggest you bring several books to read. Are day trips inland a possiblity?

cigalechanta Mar 11th, 2005 10:23 AM

if it's raining at night stop in a café to hear a fado singer.
