These may have been seasonal displays - but were truly strange sights for this yank visiting in Windsor:

Morris dancers - folk dancers, complete with some in black face- performing throughout the town. I was well enough in my cups so that actually I joined in. Perhaps you can too. Probably skip the pints though - since you'll be on call.

Upping of the Swans - some ancient ceremony of your manarchy related to the census of mute swans on the River Thames. Quite the pomp and circumstance - though not nearly as bloody loud as the changing of the guard over at the castle.

''Morris dancers ..... complete with some in black face- performing throughout the town.''

They frighten me.

We have them in East Angular - the last lot I saw were in Norwich, ringing their bells and shaking their ribbony stick things, whilst chasing terrified Christmas shoppers.

along the bend in thames street is a passage that leads to stairs that lead down to the children's maze and the river. the passage walls have a really interesting mural of windsor as it once was. there's something historically significant about the mural itself, but i don't remember what. not something that'll take much time, but a fun thing to do. does anyone else remember the significance of the mural?

Children's maze, be dammed. I'm an adult and greatly enjoyed it.
Did not quite master it. But it was a rainy day. And I had enjoyed refreshments near by.

The Duke of Connaught pub was an entertaining place to while away an evening, especially if it's open mike night.Staff were very welcoming and pub food decent.

I can't drink for two reasons. It's lent and I've given up for the duration and I may concievably be called in if there's a murder in Richmond Borough (last one - 2005) or a bomb goes off (or the Castle catches fire again).

I like the idea of the maze.

Otherwise it's the park and the river and a long walk.

Sod all.

That was 3 reasons.........unless you are going to murder someone because you are dying for a drink?!
My dear old mum (nearly 89 now)is the only person I know who gives up something she desires/enjoys for Lent, until now.

If you do the maze you have to cheat. Drop some smarties every now and then or else you will definitely be looking for that beer when you get out...........

I'm looking for a beer right now and it's only 11:30am here. I can't have one though. Three weeks to go.

It would be just my luck for Al Quaeda to attack on that day and hit the castle with an aeroplane and I can't get out of the maze.

I think that windsor Castle would shrug off a boeing 747 though. It's rather well built.

A pacifying thought CW.....Your liver is in the recovery room.
I give mine a dose of those liver tabs called Essential. Fanastic little beasts.
Bravo for sticking with it!

On a sorry note: You would be distraught to see what the Zuma supporters have done to our Queen Victoria statue/ Might find the article on the net: Natal Witness dated today.
It's not only profoundly disgusting - it doesn't change anyones perception of the Ignoramous......

I, too, have given up drink for Lent. It's remarkable that I'm not in withdrawal. But I am bored. In a big way. I've also given up chocolate and, given I eat very little of that and drink like a fish, I'm surprised I'm missing it more than the drink.

And I'm going to Church.

You, OTOH, CW, seem to be using a different Lenten calendar to mine. I reckon it's FOUR more bleedin' weeks!!

All an aside, of course. I seen to remember the castle, but can remember nothing at all about Windsor. Was I there? it's all a blur.....

I'm a fountain of ignorance about Windsor, since I barely know there's a castle there, but

GO CW! We are impressed with your self control of iron.

Favorite thing we did while in Windsor was visit the racetrack when the horses were running. Not sure if that is a year-round event, but if there are races scheduled I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately you are too early for the Windsor Beer and Jazz Festival, but drinksinwindsor.com/search/…windsor.html has a few ideas of where you personally can not drink beer during Lent but improve your taste in music no end.
