What to do in Stockholm for 4 hours
 

I will be visiting Stockholm for c 4 hours on Wednesday 24th August, late morning to early afternoon. What do people think is the best way to spend the tie ?I've heard that Gamla Stan is well worth seeing, but am not so sure about the Vasa Museum in such a short visit. Many thanks

Wow!! only 4 hours.

It is a 20-25 minute walk from Gamla Stan ( Old Town) to the Vasa Museum.

If you have a ride tell them to drop you off at Vasa and then after just stroll around Gamlan Stan.

Here are some of the places you can see in Gamla Stan by just walking about:

1. Royal Place
2. Cathedral (Storkyrkan) (next door)
3. Tessin Palace
4. Stortorget Square ( beside Cathedral)
5. Lovely Statue of St. George slaying the Dragon ( in the Square)

6.Obelisk on Slottsbacken Street in front of Place, and just a few feet away on the waterfront is Statue of Gustav III

7. Parliament Building
8. Birger Jarl Tower, ( Founder of Stockholm)

9. Swedish House of Lords ( very nice inside)

10.Finnish Church beside Tessin Palace.

11. City Hall ( Nobel Prizes given out here). You will perhaps not have time to walk to the City Hall ..but take a picture of it from across the water standing at the Parliament Buildings.

12...and my favourite ,the Stromborg building.... 3 storeys high.

When you are at the curved side of the Parliament Building, that cute building standing alone between the two Bridges is The Stromborg.

Okay enough if you see all this you will be fine....and they are all close together

I enjoyed the VASA museum - I've been fortunate to travel quite a bit and found the VASA unique, had not seen anything quite like it in other places. 4 hours is a good amount of time - I think we may have spent between 2 and 3 hours there. If it is a lovely day, maybe get out on the water a bit afterwards.

We spent a week in Stockholm and the Vasa Museum was our favorite. We spent close to 3 hours there. Enjoy!

Vasa Museum, right where the ships dock; then walk to old town, guess there wont be time to find the Ice Bar in the Hotel, very fun on a hot day as we had.

We loved the Vasa Museum. Stockholm is a lovely city. Spending only 4 hours does not do it justice. Most cruise lines spend very little time in Stockholm, as a rule.

Most people that visit me in Stockholm enjoy the walk from either the royal palace in the Old Town or the national theatre (Dramaten) to Djurgården, followed by lunch at Oaxen (you need to book to eat inside).

None of the museums, churches or royal palaces have been hits as there are much better elsewhere in Europe.

I think one reason for limited time there for cruise ships is the sail in, sail out is time consuming and also happens to be amazing. We woke up a 5am and thoroughly enjoyed passing by all the little islands and summer cottages. It was a highpoint of the trip for us. That, combined with the VASA museum, made our brief visit to Stockholm very memorable. Enjoy!

Percy, again thanks for the very useful list. Had less than 4 hours so needed so limit what we could cover. Gamla Stan was a highlight - very tourist friendly, & well worth a visit. John O'
