What to do in Split, Croatia

We will only be in Split 9hrs on a cruise. I've been on CruiseCritic and it seems most recommend their own walking tour. What did you enjoy in Split? Do you recommend staying in the old town or talking a bus up into the mountains?

If staying in town all day where do you recommend for lunch? Thanks!

Diocletian's palace is really amazing, especially the way it is incorporated into the modern city. Once you tire of that, I thought the neighborhoods of Veli Varos and Radunica were quite beautiful.
Check out this site for more info:

It has a good map.
What does the bus tour entail?

I agree with yorkshire, it's a beautiful city with great shopping! Easy to walk around and the people are really niice.

Thank you pougal and yorkshire thanks for the website. I don't know what the bus tour entails, someone on CruiseCritic said it was what she enjoyed the most so wondered if anyone here had taken it.

Two years ago we found a good family run restaurant, Konoba Marjan. Walk westward on Sperun to the end of the street.

Walking on your own will give you nothing. Better hire a local guide or join a group for at least one hour tour of the city. There is beautiful historic Trogir town only a short water taxi ride away. You can charter your own speed boat with skipper to explore the nearby islands as well

Thanks LittleVicky and asparoth, I will look into both.
