What to do in Naples
 

We need your advice on what to do or see in Naples. My wife and I are taking a 7 day tour of Campania. Following the tour we intend to stay a few days in Positano. At the end of the trip, we will spend our last day and a half to two days in Naples. We will be staying in a small hotel in the old part of the city. My question is: With only a day and a half to two days in Naples, what would you recommend that we must see or do? Also, what restaurants would you recommend for great but not too expensive real Italian food? Jim

you may want to hop the tram or train for a short jaunt west of the city to the weird Campi Flegri (sp?)

I spent a nice day in Naples last winter - it was a Sunday and all the churches were open and fairly full - it was a festive day even though an ordinary Sunday - i highly recommend Sunday in Naples

Of course sightseeing centers around the Castello and the prestigious archaeological museum but to me the glory of Naples is its churches and its incredibly narrow laundry-strung lanes redolent of a Europe long gone in the rest of Italy and Europe

The vast amount of garbage lying around, even before the garbage strike i think was a negative - broken sidewalks, etc. A poor town in the historic center

With only a day and a half to two days in Naples, you'll have to be very selective! I'd recommend that you study some guidebooks and determine your priorities based on your interests. Naples really does have a lot to offer - hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

My friends and I went through Naples on our way to Capri - we caught a ferry in Naples. Naples was not a great town with tons if sketchy people hanging around the train station. If you do go to Naples make sure you stay in the nice area of town and be careful of the little kids who will try to steal your wallets.

Step 1: Eat a fresh, hot sfogliatelle from Sfogliatelle Mary (either at the bakery off Piazza Trieste e Trento, or the "branch office" in Galleria Umberto)

Step 2: Eat a piping hot pizza margherita

Step 2.5: Digest the pizza, gazing longingly at Mt. Vesuvius and/or the Bay of Naples

Step 3: Drink an espresso at Gambrinus and/or Caffe Mexico
