What to do in Nancy, France
 

I am to spend a weekend this March in Nancy, France. Any suggstions on what to do and where to eat? Looks like we will be staying at the Hotel de Guise in vielle ville.

Stanislaus on the place Stanislas. There are cafés to stop for drinks and people watch on the square.

Don't know if this will interest you but if your into high end glass. The Daum crystal factory is in Nancy and I have always wanted to check it out. Have fun and good luck

I haven't been yet. I'm going the middle of the month around March 15th. Here's my list of things I want to do:

Musée-Aquarium de Nancy
Musée Lorraine next door to the Musée des Cordeliers
Musee du Telephone which has a cyber café
Musée des Beaux-Arts
Musée de l'École de Nancy
Visit the cathedral and any other churches I can pop into.
Try the local candy Bergamotes de Nancy
Of course Place Stanislas and the nearby Arc de Triomphe.

Restaurant recommendations I've collected are:

Brasserie Excelsior with a gorgeous art nouveau interior.
La Mignardise described as a popular bistro.

Basilique Saint Epvre...Musee historique Lorraine (hope you can make more sense of the famous "Woman with a Flea" painting than I could!)...for Algerian food: La Couscousserie des Petites Familles. IF you have a car, drive to nearby Flavigny (20 minute drive) and eat in Le Peieure. A Michelin one star, I think...just wonderful. Nearby is Chateau de Fleville, a castle like what you'd see in the Loire valley. Back in Nancy, Place Stanislas, of course. Another restaurant we liked: Le V Four. Enjoy! I think few Americans get to spend time in Nancy and it is a treasure!

ej23, this is a great time to visit Nancy as 2005 is the 250th anniversary of the inauguration of the place Stanislas, arguably one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.

Don't know which weekend you'll be there, but the Musée Historique Lorrain has a special exhibit about Stanislas, the King of Poland and father-in-law of King Louis XV of France which is showing through March 21st.

If you happen to be a fan of art and architecture, you'll be in hog heaven in Nancy - both for its 18th century architecture and for its Art Nouveau treasures of the early 1900's. Stop at the Tourist Office on the place Stanislas and pick up brochures for walking tours with architectural itineraries of both. Also, don't miss visiting the Musée de l'Ecole de Nancy.

Enjoy your visit! We're also visiting for a March weekend and are staying at the Hôtel de Guise.

In the past we've enjoyed the Brasserie Excelsior for its wonderful decor and excellent brasserie food. This trip we also have reservations at La Mignardise.

We too stayed at the Hôtel de Guise in March 2005. The location is excellent, and the hotel is a charming 2-star (without elevator) in a 17th and 18th century manor house with a beautiful period staircase. Our room, a junior suite decorated in the style of Louis XV, was really just a spacious room, but it was clean and comfortable. We thought it good value for the money.

The hotel's website looks delightful and the location near the place Stanislas is convenient. We will be arriving by train and the website indicates a 10 minute walk from the station. Do you think this is correct? We have reserved a simple room as we are staying only one night.
