What to do in Munich in mid January
 

We will be traveling to Munich for about 3 days (part of a stopover) in mid January this year. We usually visit Munich in the summertime. I have seen posts describing what to do in December when the town goes Christmas-crazy. But what about in mid January? Yes it's cold. Other than to drink merrily inside with the locals, what other things should we try doing during this time? I have no idea what Munich is like when it's cold. Thanks.

There's no difference, except the beer gardens are closed and everyone goes skiing on weekends.

How about some museums?

Or take a train to the Schliersee / Bayerischzell area from Munich central station and in less than an hour you will be hiking in the snow.

Drinking merrily in the beerhalls remains an option ;-)

Man we'd love to do some skiing but we just don't have room in our luggage for all that clothing. That is so tempting to head to the slopes. That's a good suggestion.

That spa looks great too. Is that open all year round? Their website doesn't explicitly say that.

Is there a reason why you're staying in Munich? Personally, I don't care much for cities and would high-tail it for a quaint and perfect little village nestled in the mountains. I spent a month in Mittenwald, about 90 minutes south of Munich and loved every minute of it.

From a place like Mittenwald or Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you could day-trip to Innsbruck, or take cable cars to mountain peaks, or find some gentle trails through Alpine fields. Then end the walk with a wurst and beer -- sounds like heaven!

The spa is open every day from 10am - 11pm. Sometimes they open earlier, but I don't know if that is relevant for you.

Skiing.. hum, I hate to admit it but: I do not ski, and know nothing about it...

swanday2000: Yes, we chose Munich because we really like that city and it happens to be an easy stopover for a longer trip (Egypt). It ended up being cheaper (airline tickets) to do a stopover for 3 days in Munich than it was to just go straight to Egypt. We will have to look at doing some day trips. Thanks.
