What to do in May?
I want to go back, haven't been since 1993. Will you please advise what 5 things I need to see?
|
Seriously? You have given us nothing to go on. Please provide details on where you have been and what interests you.
|
I have been to Chur, Geneva, Basil, Visp (*my favorite).
I enjoy many things, and really don't want to restrict your reply. Will you advise what YOU think is great? Thank you! GypsyMaiden |
Just a few random items for May from all over Switzerland:
On May 1 the Niesen (www.niesen.ch) summit restaurant opens for the season, and the cograil//cablecar contraption starts running. The Niesen is one of the best vantage points from which to see the alps, the Berner Oberland peaks like Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, and many others (it has a 360 degree view!). You get there by taking a train to Spiez (on the lake Thun between Thun and Interlaken), and by switching to a local train that, five minutes later, deposits you in Mülenen at the foot of the Niesen. In May the Borromeo islands on the Swiss/Italian lago Maggiore lake are in full bloom. You get there from Stresa, a town on the Italian portion of the lake - head south from Locarno. www.borromeoturismo.it/scripts/home.php?lang=en The alpine flower paradise of the Rochers de Naye is accessible from Montreux (www.montreux.ch/index_en.html) on the Swiss Riviera, on the lake Geneva. There is a cute train that goes up. The views from up there are unbeatable! http://www.montreux.ch/naye/ Nearby is the Castle Chillon www.chillon.ch/en/index.html In the region of the Lake Constance (called Bodensee in Swiss-German) these will be beautiful in May, check them out: www.lindau.de www.mainau.de www.reichenau.de/index.php?id=4&L=2 http://www.meersburg.de/c-sys/module...veLanguageId=2 There is a once-a-day coach service from Lugano near the Italian border to St Moritz in the canton of the Grisons (Graubünden) - it goes over Italian soil up a valley that is very scenic. See http://tinyurl.com/7rp4lc St. Moritz is too pricey and ritzy for many people, but the area (called Engadin) is beautiful and there are many more reasonable (and nicer) locations nearby. See www.engadin.ch/007stm_00_en.htm Engadin and also www.sils.ch/009stm_00_en.htm for Sils Maria, www.silvaplana.ch/en/ for Silvaplana, www.engadin.ch/007stm_010107_en.htm for Samedan, www.pontresina.com/011stm_00_en.htm for Pontresina. Bern is a venerable old city on the river Aare, centrally located, the seat of the Federal Government, with a core of an old city center that is at the same time historic and also very modern. Check out www.berninfo.com/en/welcome.cfm http://switzerland.isyours.com/E/gui...zytglogge.html http://www.swissworld.org/en/switzer...n_s_zytglogge/ http://www.panoramajournal.ch/regier...s/index_e.html Federal AParliament Building (with video and tour info) short at http://tinyurl.com/5okxyt Only a drop in the bucket. Hope this helps. |
A couple of years ago, we went to Switzerland in May. We visited Stein am Rhein as well as the Bernese Oberland area (Lauterbrunnen, Schilthorn, Lakes Thun & Spiez).
Our photos if you are interested: http://travel.webshots.com/album/554510509SyxotU We had great weather and enjoyed our time there tremendously. We have previously visited Lucerne on numerous occasions so we didn't go back on this last trip. However, it is one of my favorite towns in Switzerland. |
Thank you thank you thank you. Exactly what I was looking for!! I do remember Bern, sorry for not mentnioning before. I went to the US Consulate there. That was neat. AND, the clock in the downtown area, that was neat.
I will definitely use these suggestions. Thanks so much, and, Now, I will review the pictures. |

Ok, I will continue looking, but I had to tell you. I have wanted to go back from day one, but #1 my parents said no, my then-boyfriend said no, and now I say YES. I am so doing this in May.
