What to do in Madrid for 6 hours between the flight?
 

Our Iberia flight from Tel Aviv to New York will have a longer than expected stop in Madrid (now 6 hours during the day on Sunday). What we can do during this time? Can we leave luggade in the some kind of storage at the terminal? How far is airport from the city? Should we take taxi (what would be the price?) or bus if it's not that long? And how to get back to airport? (agaian taxi / bus). Is it easy to get back to the airport? What we can possibly see in a few hours? We will be with 13 year old son.

The Prado is free on Sundays from 3-8 PM and there are restaurants across the street.

Not sure about luggage but cab is not that expensive.

Madrid is a great airport, and one reason is because it is fairly close to the city. It's only about 10 miles, so a taxi isn't that expensive, and especially on Sunday, that should work. The last time I took one from Madrid to the airport during a time with light traffic, I think it was around 20-25 euro.

There are luggage lockers in a facility across from Terminal 1, which is probably where you'll be. Someone can probably show you where they are. You will need ID and I think they do security checks on them, but you can leave them there for a small fee.

Well, if you only stay six hours in Madrid I think the best option it's to walk around city centre: Retiro Parck, Major Place, Malasaña district…., and feeling the city.

I think it’s no worth to go in a museum because you won’t have enough time to see it with stillness.

In another time it’s possible you had more time and you will be able to know the city more deeply

For going to the centre you can take the taxi o the tub. There are two tub stop in Barajas airport, one in Terminal 4, and another in Terminals 1-2-3. Tub is the faster and cheaper way to go to the city.

I agree. Take a taxi and walk around main sights in the center. Sample some food and get a general feel for this beautiful city.

The Prado is in same area as two other notable art museums, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and is a couple of blocks from Parque del Buen Retiro (which is a lovely large park).

I found the Prado to be too homogenous for my taste (lots of large paintings of people in the Old Masters style), but you can walk through to get a feel for it. More modern art is in the other two museums I listed.

Definitely take a cab.

Thanks for all info. It would be very helpfull to know how much will it take to pass pasport control, etc. when we will lend in Madrid and when we should be in airport in order to check in to the Madrid-JFK flight. Between flights should I take care of luggage or it will be taken care of and I'll received it in final destination? Another words I try to estimate how much "real" time I would get. How long tube takes and want is the price? Maybe I can do just one way on the tube and back on taxi

Your bags ought to be checked through - no need to fetch them or worry about that.

By any chance are you traveling in business class? If so, the Iberia lounges at Barajas are simply excellent.
