What to do in Brighton?
 

I'm going to spend next Saturday in Brighton. What is there to do there? Any special restaurants to go to? Things to see?

There is England's only English restaurant, in Hove Actually, called Harry's.

Shepherds pie, bangers and mash, liver and bacon, snake and pygmy pie....delishimous.

Obviously, the Royal Pavilion...

There are some pretty nifty antique/junk shops all over the place there as well.

wander around the Laines and get a piercing / tattoo?

Not sure whether they'll be fully geared up as for the summer (in this weather), but it might be worth having a stroll along the pier and looking for some novelty rock.

just hope for a nice day. brighton can be dismal in grey weather (esp outside of the summer) but lively and fun in the sun. this time of the year it is a toss up. for seafood, you can't go wrong with the regency...right on the waterfront near the west pier (the one in ruins). food for friends is also pretty good as is the more expensive terre a terre. there is a pretty decent tapas place hidden away in the lanes - casa don carlos (can get very busy so you may need to reserve).

if it's nice out, NORTH LAINE should be fairly lively on a saturday in late march. 20 somethings should appreciate this funky area of clothing, record, junk, etc stores and some interesting pubs and restaurants. not to be confused with 'THE LANES' which is mainly antique jewellery stores and uninspiring restaurants (but worth a stroll through on your way from NORTH LAINE to the beach). re: sashh's post, there is no such thing as 'the laines'. i'm not trying to be a pedant but this can confuse.

the waterfront at beach level also has a few interesting shops and art galleries. e.g. two kats and a cow.

near the waterfront, dr brighton's is a friendly (for both gay and straight) and relaxed pub...at least during the day and early evening.

As you get off the train you will feel as though you are in the states with all of the US type stores,etc. I loved the old aquarium down by the water and the Royal Pavilion. There are various tea shops,pubs, and curry places all over.

Well, you didn't say what you like, so you are getting a variety of suggestions. Here's one a bit out of the ordinary.

North Laines area, near station. Collector records and CD's, much current UK especially Brighton Hip-Hop.

If you're around in the evening, head for the Hanbury Club (www.thehanburyclub.com). They have supper club nights on Saturdays with a quirky 30s theme, and actually good food – the in-laws live in Brighton, so I try to head over whenever I'm (dragged) down.

The in-laws themselves swear by the food at the Hotel du Vin (French bistro), a good spot for lunch.

Otherwise, wondering the Laines should be entertainment enough.

I love Brighton! I went there last week for my flatmates birthday and it's such a cool quirky town. Bars can be expensive and I had some problems getting into some bars because I was with a group of guys (if you can, go in a mixed group of boys and girls), though we found smaller groups definitely worked.

Places to go, the locals say a club called Oceana is where its at! It's a big club on the sea front. It was really good, 3 rooms - good stuff. Has anyone else been there.

Definitely worth building up a planned approach. I find www.viewbrighton.com was a good guide for coming up with things to do.

Only last bit of advice, if you're staying for one night - book in advance! I was calling around 3 weeks before we went and I think we were very lucky to get a room. Most places only have 2 night minimum stays, but the Great Western hotel on the sea front let us stay for one night. Awesome!
