What to do in Barcelona for New Year's Eve

I will be going with my husband and grown son to Barcelona over the New Year's holiday, arriving Dec. 26 and departing January 4. After reading about Irego's experience with Habitatapartments, I booked their Carders Apartment in the El Born area and I'm very excited about it. This will be our first apartment stay ever and it's something I've been wanting to try for a long time.

We've been to Barcelona 4 times, though our son has never been, so we're pretty certain of what we want to do and where we want to eat. The only thing I'm unsure of and somewhat concerned about is New Year's Eve--or Cap D'Any as the Catalans apparently call it. I know about eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight, but other than that I'd like some info about what they do on that important night.

Are there fireworks someplace? Street gatherings? Do most people reserve and do dinner that stretches into a celebration in the restaurant? Should I be looking to reserve something soon to be sure we're not stuck aimlessly wandering to "find the party?"

In short, whazzup with BCN New Year's Eve? Appreciate any help, recommendations and info you can provide.

Totally unrelated, but go see the new Woody Allen movie, Vicky Cristina Barcelona. I loved it and even if you don't, the scenes of Barcelona (and a quick trip to Orveido) are gorgeous.

It's on my list to do tomorrow night. There's a cute piece in today's NYTimes that's a mock look into Woody's diary as he's directing it.

There are firework show by the port so it's one obvious place to go. I instead went 31Dec a few years back, to Plaça Espagna, put myself on the steps to the National Museum and saw firework show and magic fountain show. Take a bottle of cava as many others do and enjoy. If you don't get many other replies, do try barcelona forum on tripadvisor.com. There are more than a few locals post there.

That sounds good. I've never been there when the magic fountains were working, so that would be a very good night to see it. Thanks.

And do not forget to eat twelve grapes at midnight. It is a Spanish tradition.
