What to do in and around Dorgone?

My friend and I will be spending a week near the town of Verteillac in the Dorgone region. We will have a car and would love to find out about some cool places to go for the day. Anyone have any suggestions? We love hiking, castles, exploring towns and canoeing etc..

Hi,

You'll find plenty to keep yourselves occupied. I recommend getting or borrowing the Cadogan Guide to Dordogne and the Lot and the Michelin Guide (we had the one for Dordogne, Berry and Limousin).

In addition to the guidebooks, do a search here for Dordogne. Many, many helpful threads should come up.

We loved it there and especially enjoyed Sarlat, Cadouin, Font de Gaume, Castenaud, Chateau des Milandes...and pretty much everything. We also liked the trips we made to the Lot.

We stayed in Beynac. We loved canoeing the river, walking to Castelnaud for lunch, sight seeing La Roque Gageac, Domme, Sarlat, Font de Gaume. Also took a loop ride to Rocamadour, Martel, Carannac etc..
Loved all of it!

You're not in the core of the Dordogne, but here are some places to visit that are fairly close to your town: Brantôme, Bourdeilles, St. Jean de Côle, Périgueux, Jumilhac. You are also within an easy drive of Oradour-sur-Glane.
